Jeff Quinn is very, very good though.

I don’t think he was the guy that had them churning out all those stud OL though, right? He’s only been there since 2018. How has the OL been since 2018 there?

It was Harry Hiestand. Quinn needs to be an analyst or something. Give him lots of dough to help recruit.

Kelly is really the OC. We actually have an offensive minded coach. Hell, we even have a coach that has a damn specialty at all.

You don't know Brian Kelly if you think he drops Tommy Rees.

You can have Quinn and Alexander. They are two of the weak links on the staff.

Elston would be a huge loss for us. He is up there for best DL coaches in the country.

Rees is what he is - a Kelly underling OC without much autonomy. If you thought Kelly was going to go out and make a splash OC hire, then you were in for a rude awakening.

From an FSU team that has played ND, why are Quinn and Alexander big mehs? And not that we had a defense to make Rees do anything but eat popcorn but was it Kelly's playsheet with Rees picking out the plays, or did Rees set the gameplan playsheet himself? I haven't watched any of NDs other games so how did you feel about the adjustments?

Honestly it seemed like the playsheet was limited and he kept calling the same 3 runs and same 3 route combos. Like I said we suck and it worked in the game I obviously watched but if I was LSU I wouldn't like this follow

FBS teams that have averaged more than 30 points on offense and averaged fewer than 20 points allowed on defense for four consecutive years (obviously excluding the 2021 postseason):

1. Alabama
2. Notre Dame

There ya go. That’s the list.

The OL fairly noticeably regressed after Hiestand left, especially with the talent still on the roster. The OL's from about 2014 through about 2017 were likely the best, year in and year out, in the country, and we had four top ten draft picks off the OL in that period and hadn't had any OL drafted at all until last year's draft (though, to be fair, we had 2 in the second and 1 in the third). The OL was also absolutely atrocious in the first half of this year until our bye week (not exaggerating, the worst since the Weis years), but they seemed to figure that out a bit, though the soft schedule in the back half of the season helped. Cincinnati chewed through out OL all game long, and Coan and Buchner had PTSD after that game. Absolutely no excuse for that given the OL talent we had and have on the roster.

Alexander is more because WR has been a major development weak spot since he's been on staff, and he hasn't recruited particularly well, either. I think the consensus among ND fans was, even before Kelly left, that he was the weakest position coach on staff, and I actually thought he was going to be let go after this year had Kelly stayed.

Our studs on the current staff are:
Freeman (obviously)
Elston (DL / Recruiting) - would hate to lose him
Lance Taylor (RB)
Balis (S&C)

McNulty and Terry Joseph seem like they're pretty solid as well, but there just haven't been enough data points to accurately assess them.

Kelly is the architect and designer of the offense, full stop. Make no mistake about it - that is his baby. Kelly called plays until Chip Long was hired in 2017, and that arrangement continues with Rees series to series, but Kelly provides the design and the constraints and just about everything else outside of actual playcalling. I think Rees is actually a fairly decent playcaller when given the opportunity to show his stuff.

Of the things to be concerned about with Kelly, if I were LSU, I wouldn't be all that concerned about that. Kelly's offenses are almost always fairly basic out of the gate. He adds a lot throughout the season.
