LSU basketball coach Will Wade received some big news Tuesday as forward Saliou Niang has been ruled eligible to play for the Tigers during the 2026-27 season, according to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein.
Rothstein reported that multiple sources confirmed Niang's eligibility, clearing the way for the 6-foot-8 forward to make his LSU debut this season.
Niang was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the No. 58 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft but never signed an NBA contract. He played for Cleveland's Summer League team before returning overseas to play professionally for Virtus Bologna in Italy during the 2025-26 season.
Rothstein described Niang as one of the SEC's most impactful newcomers and expects him to be a major contributor for Wade's Tigers this season.
The news is a significant boost for LSU, which has been dealing with eligibility questions surrounding several international players and former professionals on its roster.
According to Rothstein, Niang was represented by attorney Don Jackson throughout the eligibility process.
LSU returns to action Saturday, October 24, for an exhibition game at Florida State before opening the regular season in November.
