Baylor University has filed a lawsuit against LSU offensive lineman Sean Thompkins, alleging he failed to pay an $85,000 buyout after transferring to the Tigers earlier this year.

According to KWTX, the lawsuit was filed Friday in Texas and claims Thompkins violated the terms of a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreement he signed with Baylor in December 2025.

The agreement was originally set to run through June 2027 but was terminated when Thompkins entered the transfer portal in January.

Baylor claims the two sides reached a settlement on May 13 that established a payment schedule for the buyout. However, the university alleges Thompkins failed to make any payments.

The school sent Thompkins and his attorney a formal demand for payment on September 22 but received no response, according to the lawsuit.

Baylor is seeking $85,000, plus attorney fees, court costs and interest.

Thompkins spent three seasons at Baylor before transferring to LSU. He appeared in 10 games during the 2025 season, starting the final five at left tackle.

The offensive lineman has appeared in all eight games for LSU this season under Lane Kiffin.

Interesting timing. They must be looking for money to pay Dave Aranda’s buyout. They sound broke.

Everyone isn't like you and thinks $85K is peanuts.

Hopefully the court rules in favor of Baylor. Something has to give schools teeth in the disaster that is the portal and NIL.

Baylor and Thompkins signed an agreement for him to make payments. He hasn't made any payments. He doesn't respond to Baylor. His lawyer doesn't respond. I think we know how this will come out.

That 85k is gone plus whatever LSU gave him. I hope I am wrong but the NIL/portal world is going to ruin a lot of young athletes financially.

This is a litigation issue between Baylor and Thompkins. Not sure why anyone here should be upset over a contract dispute. It will either be settle in, or out of court. Baylor isn't suing LSU

Pretty sure this is settled law now. If the school had paid out the money in advance they could recover a prorated amount. If not they are out of luck. Not sure what school would be dumb enough to pay it out in advance.

Who terminated the agreement? I thought these agreements couldn't be tied to a player's participation with a school.

How can a university be tied to an NIL payment

Tell you what: it’s must’ve really been awesome when collegiate sports were a pastime and not big business.

Why is this LSU’s problem?

A deal is a deal…if he signed a contract to play for Baylor, then that’s what he should be doing

Wonder if they’ll sue LSU if Aranda returns?

Signed the NIL deal in December and entered the transfer portal a month later?

Great recruiting tactic for them to sue student athletes

If the student violated the contract, then yes, they can sue. There isn't much difference between NIL contracts and others. I agree with schools requesting a portion of the money back if the student didn't fulfill their end of the deal.
