ESPN released a list on Tuesday of nine teams that have a chance to make the College Football Playoff National Championship but did not include undefeated No. 5 LSU.

Here are the nine teams ESPN picked and their current rankings:

1. Alabama (No. 1)
2. Ohio State (No. 3)
3. Georgia (No. 2)
4. Clemson (No. 4)
5. Notre Dame (No. 6)
6. Oklahoma (No. 7)
7. Penn State (No. 11)
8. Washington (No. 10)
9. Michigan (No. 15)
quote:

The others:
It's a common theme here -- and also to be expected, considering we're entering only Week 6 -- that some of the best teams in the country are still in need of résumé-boosting wins. There are ample opportunities, especially in the Big 12, Big Ten and SEC. Two more teams that were just on the verge of making the list were LSU and West Virginia, which both have a 6.4 percent chance to make the playoff but only a 0.6 percent chance to win it all.

Beat Georgia and Alabama and they'll have to take you seriously.

I think it can be done.

Just Georgia and those odds will rise. A 1 loss LSU team losing to only bama would likely = playoff. As we saw last year.

Big10 didn’t have a team in the playoff. Ohio St doesn’t play anybody else this year. There won’t be two SEC teams this year.

Considering strength of schedule, I can see LSU not being up there. But Michigan? Is ESPN on crack?

Yes.

Strength of schedule? We have the hardest schedule in FBS this season, and you gonna say we not being up there?
user avatar

LegendaryTiger...he means because of the strength of the schedule moving forward (probable losses), he doesn't see us making the playoffs. This is the same reason ESPN doesn't give us a better chance. Our road is extremely difficult from here to the end.

Right. If it's too easy, they question your resume. If it's too hard, they say you can never make it through. I guess you have to aim for the sweet spot in the middle of the pack. I read the full article on ESPN this morning; one of their criteria is that you have to beat at least two top 25 teams. Well LSU already accomplished that, with at least 3 more on the schedule, maybe as many as 5 more if State beats Auburn and A&M strings a few W's together. Thus, our schedule is too tough for them to predict us to make it to the CFP. I'm not worried about what they have to say. Let's just go 1-0 this week.

ESPN basis their prediction on who has a cup cake schedule the rest of the way such as OU. They should beat Texas and then all they have left is WV.

This. LSU won’t make it through October without at least one loss and Alabama is a gauranteed loss. That puts LSU out of the playoffs.

Well if they have Michigan in it and not LSU, I would say that should provide plenty of motivation for the Tigers in the weeks to come........
