Julie Bennett-USA TODAY Sports
ESPN released a list on Tuesday of nine teams that have a chance to make the College Football Playoff National Championship but did not include undefeated No. 5 LSU.

Here are the nine teams ESPN picked and their current rankings:

1. Alabama (No. 1)
2. Ohio State (No. 3)
3. Georgia (No. 2)
4. Clemson (No. 4)
5. Notre Dame (No. 6)
6. Oklahoma (No. 7)
7. Penn State (No. 11)
8. Washington (No. 10)
9. Michigan (No. 15)

The others:
It's a common theme here -- and also to be expected, considering we're entering only Week 6 -- that some of the best teams in the country are still in need of résumé-boosting wins. There are ample opportunities, especially in the Big 12, Big Ten and SEC. Two more teams that were just on the verge of making the list were LSU and West Virginia, which both have a 6.4 percent chance to make the playoff but only a 0.6 percent chance to win it all.

They aren't wrong... LSU has the toughest road thanks to the SEC Office in Gumpland.

I'm sorry I don't understand the corndog smelling logic here. So, you believe that the SEC office is to blame for LSU's toughest road? That's some crazy sh1t (a reference to your screen name). Hey Man! LSU has a great team this year and best of luck to the Tigers but think before you type. LSU has a difficult schedule and that's the reason for the non-top 9 listed above. Wins over GA and M State will greatly affect the odds. Beat GA, M State and Bama and the Tigers are a lock! It is possible. Best of luck Tigers.

Who cares? Just win. Everything else takes care of itself. ESPN doesn't report. ESPN is all about making themselves the story. We have one of the toughest if not the toughest schedules in the country so if we win it will come out in the wash. It's when you have a schedule like Oklahoma or in a weak conference that you have to worry about what ESPN thinks.

This looks to me like a ploy to stay relevant nationally. They have a team in from roughly every geographic region. They cover the south with Alabama and Georgia. Looks more like a marketing gimmic to me than anything else.

I agree... there doesn't appear to be much logic in their selection. Either Bama or Georgie or LSU (if one of these falters then they are out... yes, even Bama... Bama has the easiest schedule with only LSU and Auburn left... then GA. LSU has the most difficult because back end of schedule looks terrifying). Why is Washington even listed? I think Ohio State and Notre Dame are in if they continue to win (there is your marketing link). Penn State and Michigan... don't know why they are listed either. Oklahoma doesn't have a defense (Texas may take them out- rivalry game at Texas this year).

Yeah I’ve got thoughts...every ESPN analyst has already been wrong about LSU twice this season. I’d rather bet on them being wrong again.

Did we always go this crazy after 5 games? Let’s get through Florida in Gainesville with UGA and BAMA waiting before we get too upset. We have plenty of time to give them the middle finger

exactly. Look, 5-0 is a hell of a start, but the meat of our schedule remains, with a brutal 4-game stretch upon us. Let's wait until November to start talking playoffs.
