Spinoff from previous thread on Amalfi coast for Summer 2025. Me , Mrs jkyle, and two boys (17&15) going to Italy next year and trying to get ahead on some of the planning. My question is … how many days would you suggest to spend in Rome (where we’ll likely be flying into) and what area of the city would you suggest staying. I found a place I really like but not sure how ideal the location is. Seems walkable to some good stuff. Any info/tips appreciated.

The location of the nice little apartment I found is below. I was thinking 2-3 days before Amalfi coast. The main places I want to see are Colosseum and Sistine Chapel .

That place is fine. Monti and Travestere are really great neighborhoods to stay and visit.

Colosseum and Sistine Chapel

Colosseum - Buy skip the line tickets with a guided tour or just go and walk around the outside. The lines to get in were legitimately the longest lines I have ever seen. Maybe a mile long of people waiting. It would take most of the day to get in there.

Sistine Chapel - Be prepared. It is nice and all but it's not what you are expecting. It is standing room only and the room is absolutely shoulder to shoulder packed. They limit your time in there as well and its loud, hot and people are bumping into you the whole time. There are a couple of places to sit along the wall but there are no pews. It's just a giant open space. Again, get the skip the line tickets or be prepared to be in line for hours.

That is about where we are staying when we finish our cruise in Rome. Will stay three extra days after. This was an area many people suggested because you could walk to the Trastevere area for dinner etc and was close to attractions. I haven't got tickets for the Colosseum yet but we do have tickets for the Sistine Chapel. We bout a tour called the Pristine Sistine where you would get in first before everyone else. Now they don't let groups in early but we will still be one of first in.

My wife and I did an Italy trip a few years ago. We spent 3 nights and 2 full days in Rome and felt like it was enough. We stayed in Trastavere in an AirBnB. We loved the area, very walkable and had a more residential feel than across the river near all of the sites. We would get a quick coffee on the corner and catch a cab into the city proper. Doing our research the only consensus we could find was to NOT stay near the main train station in Rome.

The first day we did a Colosseum and Roman Forum small group tour through Walks of Italy. We did the early morning tour and it was excellent. Took about 4 hours, we hit the Colosseum first before it was crowded, and then walked across to the Forum. We spent that afternoon seeing other sites in town- Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, etc.

The second day we hit the Vatican. We did a tour called "Pristine Sistine", also by Walks of Italy. We entered the Vatican complex before it opened to the public, and our group of 20 or so had about 15 mins inside the Chapel where it was just us. It was awesome. Our group then did a full tour of the Vatican, and made a quick pass through the Chapel again- and this time it was shoulder to shoulder.

The tour ended inside St. Peter's and we also had the Scavi tour lined up that afternoon. Caught a cab back into Rome, walked among the ruins for a bit and saw a nice sunset. We headed out the next morning. We felt like the 2 full days was enough to see everything we wanted.

This doesn't address your question about where to stay but you might consider the tour that allows you to open the doors to the Sistine Chapel. That would ensure you don't have to wait in lines! Here's a link to buy tickets: LINK and here's an article that describes it: LINK
There's also the Scavi tour that goes underneath St. Peter's Basilica and allows you to see the tomb of St. Peter. It's a really cool tour!

ETA: just saw the post above - sorry for the duplicate info

Thank you all a ton for the replies. Def will pony up for a good experience. Sistine chapel has been on my bucket list a very long time so I want to enjoy it. From what I’ve read I can’t take pictures but I’m good with that. The long lost art of just being in a moment vs having a dumbass phone out needs to make a comeback. But it won’t.

Thanks again.

If I remember correctly a few people in our group snagged a few quick pics inside the chapel without our guide seeing them. To this day I kick myself for not doing that, but on the other hand I can still remember standing there and soaking in all of the artwork- just being present in the moment.

Took my son a few years ago. He chipped in and got us a Private Tour Guide for the Vatican. That was well worth it.

If that area is near the Campo di Fiore, that is fine. I have stayed there before. It is an easy walk across the river to the Vatican and Sistine Chapel.

Hosteria Costanza is a good restaurant just off Campo di Fiore. The food is very good and the restaurant is built among the ruins of the old Theatre of Pompey which is part of the complex where the Roman Senate was meeting when Julius Caesar was assassinated there.

Everything around the Campo di Fiori is great. I stayed a block off of it in October. It's a market during the day and by 5pm they are clearing out, and it becomes an open air piazza surrounded by great restaurants with outdoor seating.

Near the Piazza Navona is great also, but I am partial to Campo.

Osteria da Fortunata is right off the Campo di Fiori
Great italian food with the old ladies making pasta in the window. There are actually 2 separate buildings catty-corner to each other serving the same menu

I'd recommend the "Breakfast at the Vatican" ticket from the official Vatican site. It wasn't even that much more per person... less than 20 Euros and it includes museum entrance. You get in maybe an hour early, they have you in the courtyard (Cortille della Pigna) and you basically rope drop the museum. We were alone in the Raphael rooms and with maybe 12 other people in the Sistine Chapel.

We actually didn't even end up eating breakfast fwiw (they don't force you if you just want to skip the lines)

Evidence of the emptiness...

Not reading everyone elses comments first, but I will say, the wife and I wished we would have spent more time in Rome. We spent 2.5 days there. We will be going back to spend an additional 2-3 days.

That is the rule in the Sistine Chapel but people are taking pictures constantly. Every few minutes the guard will order that cameras be put away then they start coming out again 30 seconds later.

I recently got back from Rome and stayed in an Airbnb in Trastevere. I really liked the area. Great food/ atmosphere and felt safe (had my 2 younger daughters with me). Here is the link to where we stayed. The master bedroom overlooks the oldest active church in Rome.

Me and my wife did a 4 day honeymoon in Rome 2 summers ago before meeting my family in France and doing a big 2 weeks trip.

We stayed at a very nice hotel in the Pantheon square. Our balcony over looked the square.

First day when we landed we did all the walking things. Coliseum, Caesars forums.

2nd day was Vatican, Sistine Chapel. That night we did a food tour of Travestire.

3rd day we took a day trip to Florence.

4th day we Toured the Necropolis beneath the Vatican where St. Peter is buried. (if you have any interest in this, need to start looking for tickets now.) Walked the 581 steps to the top of the Vatican. And we went to a church called Sancta Santorum which has the exact steps that Jesus walked on the day he was sentenced to death; a surreal experience.

IMO, it really matters what's most important to you.

If I were going back to Rome I would stay in Trastevere, it has more of a residential neighborhood vibe than a lot of Rome. But that's what I look for when I travel, I want to hangout where people live, rather than the touristy places (obviously you have to hit up some of these like St. Peter's Basilica, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, etc...).
