Airports

I saw this a while back and really thought it captures what we are all saying in this thread.

Years ago it was pretty apparent that most people flying were somewhat affluent (or at least employed).

A part of this is that people now dress like shite when they fly. Even people flying for business. Half our group now flies in t-shirts and gym shorts when they used to always fly with slacks, shirt, and tie. If we are going to a meeting directly after the flight instead of a hotel, they just change in the airport bathroom after landing.

In this day and age being somewhat affluent/employed doesn't necessarily equate to having any class or knowing how to behave away from the workplace. Also, there are tons of jobs that pay a lot and people that own their own businesses that just don't have a need to be at all "polished."

Money and class are not the same thing.

Most of the people I am noticing are urbanites.

People are required to have a real ID/passport to fly but it’s racist to require people show it when voting. SMH

Unless I'm going to a meeting directly after, I'm dressing for comfort. Our society has relaxed the dress code in the workplace (especially since covid) and that has transferred over to every day life. The only people I still see in suites are attorneys (only in court) and finance bros.

No one said that you had to wear a suit. And why do you people equate “comfort” with looking sloppy? You can be comfortable and simultaneously not look like a slob.

Budget airlines
been flying spirit for the most part lately and it’s awesome I don’t understand how people don’t realize this. The planes are brand new, comfortable, they have options to sit up front for just a few bucks more, they fly direct to places I want to go, and rarely have issues with schedule. Yesterday I flew AA Msy>CLT>ORF and it was a shitshow up and down, trash passengers/both flights delayed over an hour/shitty planes/shitty all the way around

give me the spirit flight 10/10

This. Wear pants on the plane. I do not want our knees or legs touching.

Another great point. There is plenty of room between wearing a three-piece brooks brothers suit and looking like the Lebowski.

White fishing shirt
Navy blazer or fleece vest (keeps your shite in pockets)
five pocket khakis
socks (need them if the TSA machine is out of calibration and your shoes come off)
Slip on loafers that are comfy and easy to take off when TSA calibration is out.

If you aren't comfortable in this, maybe you have scabies or something.

You've been scanned too many times. Shoes without laces belong at home next to your smoking jacket. I'm not wearing pants on a flight until every cabin is at 66 degrees or cooler before people start boarding.

Baking on planes on tarmacs in spring, summer, and fall at IAH, ATL, and EWR made me that way.

From the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, flying is significantly less expensive than it was 25-30 years ago.

So you want to touch other dudes legs. Thats cool. Good thing you are comfortable admitting it. Larry Craig had a hard time with that and it got him in trouble.

So much accuracy in this thread.

Flying is fricking terrible these days, not that it was great pre, but the major turning point was Covid. Holy shite, post-covid it has been a clusterfrick.

The rise of low-cost airlines and social media influencers have motivated lower-middle class and working class people to get out and travel more. That’s why.

Spirit is trash and that’s why it’s cheap. I can’t even count how many times my flights got cancelled with them.

Thats the problem, they don't. They lack basic understanding of norms and common courtesies, much less common fricking sense. Oh yeah, and 50% are fat and disgusting.

Dealt with one yesterday, put her roller bag back 5-6 rows instead of further up when she boarded. Upon landing she fought her way back to get it and then expected to regain her place back up front to deplane while everyone else was in the aisle with their rollers. Sure enough, she barged her way, hitting people and squeezing her bag through.

If you've flown for 10+ yrs, right now is about as bad as its been. The only time that was worse was the 6 months immediately post-covid.
