I have a chance to spend a few days over there. Anybody here ever visit? Is it cool to be around French speakers?

Montreal is fantastic, Quebec City was ok but it was over run with tourists when I was there. People will greet you in French but as soon as you respond in English they switch over. People were very friendly and food is great.

Montreal is a great town. Finding English speakers is a non-issue. Strong food scene. Hit Schwartz’s Deli for Montreal smoked meat. Take in Notre Dame cathedral. Public transportation is fast, safe and clean.

I have been to Quebec City and loved it. It is like an arrondesment in Paris. The restaurants are French, the architecture is French and everyone speaks French.

We stayed at the Château Frontenac, the big fortress like hotel on top of the hill.

Honestly, one of my favorite cities in North America.

In the right months, has to be right up there for best city in North America. I thought the restaurants were spectacular - especially for meat eaters. I had a moose steak that was perhaps the best piece of meat I've ever had. In that same meal, had venison, rabbit, beef and lobster.

Montreal is one of the best cities I have ever been to. Quebec City is very beautiful as well.

In summer, both are amazing

As others have said, Montreal is an awesome place.

Make sure to check out St-Viateur Bagel.

Never been to Quebec.

Montreal is awesome! One of my favorite trips. I’d love to go back and attend the Mural Festival. Great city and nice people. They all speak English, so no big deal.

Lived in Montreal one summer (circa 2002) and spent another couple of weeks there as a tourist a few years later. It was a spectacular place to live and visit. Very bike friendly.

People were incredibly nice. One example: Wife and I went to an Expos (RIP) game. We were standing in the ticket line when a French Canadian couple pulled us out and gave us a pair of seats next to them. Ended up being behind home plate, watching Curt Schilling, all for free.

I was in classes at McGill, but we had extended afternoons and evenings free. We would walk all over town and find the best little restaurants and festivals. Never felt unsafe, even when it got dark (which seemed like it was after 9PM).

And, like someone mentioned above, the city’s bagels are fantastic. Fresh and better than anything I’ve ever found elsewhere.

First of all ........Their French is a bastardized version of French.

Montreal and Quebec was a part of my territory. Oddly enough, we had a French Foreign Exchange student with us for a year my daughter's Senior year of High School. I was trying to get Instruction Books translated to French. We sent the books to a translator. The translated book was then handed to our Rap in Montreal. Jean Guy took a look at the work done and proceeded to correct over half the book. I then gave the book to our French Foreign Exchange Student. She couldn't understand what he had translated!

Anyway, they speak English, don't let them try to fool you. Lot of History in the area .......They were fighting Indians before the US was formed ....

Just wanted to say that Montreal was cool as shite. So much fun

Also spent time up north in Charlevoix and the small town experience paired well. French came in way more handy up there, a lot of people had issues speaking English.

If we wanted to do this for a summer trip with kids... any rough ideas on how much time is needed for each city?

Love Montreal, you probably know this already, but doesn’t feel like it’s even in the same country as, say, Vancouver.
Great food, super nice people and it feels more like Europe than anywhere else I’ve been in North America.

Vancouver is awesome, also. But yeah, just incredibly different places.

I spent a few days in Montreal last year and had a blast. Also everything is pretty much a 30% discount with the exchange rate. I'm planning to go back this year.
