I don't take long trips. I know everyone here seems to take 2-3 well trips but I can usual only do 7 days.
I plan to direct from Nola to London and rent a car. I am more interested in seeing the country side than give cities. I want to try some pubs and maybe stay in inns and need and breakfast. I plan two days in London and the other 4 nights in south England. Not going to make Scotland this trip so I want to stay south in Britain.
Any must sees?
I travel cheaply usually but liking for 5 star accommodation. I can do shared bathrooms but no hostels.
Thinking of going late next month.

Have you ever been to London before?

Because its a massive city with so so so much to do, 2 nights will not do it any kind of justice.

I haven't spent too much time in the countryside, but I have been to Bath and Stonehenge.

Highly recommend both. Bath was really charming, liked it a lot. Stonehenge is a must do imo

My advice: Nix the car. There are a ton of day trips outside London that can be easily done by train. Use a taxi or driver if you need to.

When I hear short trip to London I think post happy hour 9:00 pm out of JFK Friday night and 6:00 am Monday red eye back, then work a half day Monday. Those were the days.

Real answer, 3 days in london, then 2 separate day trips by train outside of the City.

Would suggest The Cotswolds for a few days if you like to hike

I really wanted to experience the country side.
I've been to Heathrow twice but never left the airport.
This would be a first.
. I'm not a interested in big cities as I am smaller villages.
I guess this first trip I should do London plus day trips.
Maybe that's better. I just found cheap airbnbs on the coast and was considering that. I don't have to see Stonehenge.
I just want to try some food and see some sites.

I agree with staying in London and take day trips. We have done day trips to the Cotswolds, Oxford, Brighton and Windsor. We were in Windsor last October and it was very crowded. Seems the bus tour peeps have discovered the off season.

Go to Oxford. You can day trip from London on a train if you end up not renting a car. Go into old bookshops, tour the Radcliffe Camera at the Bodleian, wander past the old universities. Lots of great pubs but I like the Eagle and Child and The Perch.

Go to Bath and tour the Roman bath ruins.

I vote for Cambridge over Oxford. On a good weather day, it is quite impressive and lovely.

I wouldn’t bother renting a car. Just take a train to each place you want to go. You can see a lot if you arrive on the direct from MSY. It doesn’t get dark until 9 or 930. While most things close at 5 or 6, you can walk around a see a lot in London. Day trips to Salisbury/Stonehenge, Oxford, Bath, Canterbury, Cotswold towns are all great day trips. There is a corporation that owns MANY pubs/restaurants named “green” something. There are many others that are not if you research it. Have fun!

Most of the pubs are corporate owned, so don't be too wowed that it says it's supposedly 300 years old.

Agree with going NW a bit towards Manchester (Brecon Beacons, etc.,) if you like hiking. The best pubs are usually in the middle of nowhere because they have the most authentic English (which are not usually Londoners.)

Based on what I see on direct flights out of MSY to LHR, you're going to land at about 1 PM local. Be aware, this means that is a wasted day, you won't have time to do anything. By the time you get to the hotel it may be 4-5PM. Do not got to sleep until it gets dark (and don't stay up super late) on day 1, otherwise half your trip will be you sleeping when you should be driving.

I wouldn't waste my time with the British museum. You'll sink half a day there, all on stuff you can see on the Internet. Try for the changing of the guard at the palace, take pictures at Trafalgar square, have a tea service if you're going with a woman, and leave. Maybe Churchill war rooms.

A short trip on the tube will get you to the smaller town/suburb of Wimbledon. I was very impressed by it including visiting the tennis center just outside of the town. If you stay in London I would walk around the Hyde Park/Mayfair/Soho areas and Notting Hill.

from waterloo station, you can catch trains to windsor and hampton court. both are great. also the docklands light rail will take you to greenwich. worth a visit. from there you can catch a boat ride down the thames to westminister. london is my favorite place in the world to explore. the jack the ripper night walking tour was fun.

I rented a car in London and drove to a town with no train service. The countryside was awesome!

BUT, while I had no issues driving on the wrong side of the road, the steering wheel being on the wrong side makes it’s so hard to judge where the left side of your vehicle is and it makes it hard to enjoy the actual drive.

I would say only rent a car if you absolutely have to.

I second Greenwich. That is pretty cool. Loved Bath.

Once you start researching London, you are going to see that there is so an overwhelming amount of cool stuff to see and do there you might reassess. Plus London is like towns within towns within towns.

Def do Churchill War Rooms

I drove around southern England one day, and it was definitely hard to sit on the right, with your mirror backwards, shifting a manual transmission with my left hand, etc. As has already been said, driving on the wrong side of the road isn't the hardest part.

But if you can manage all that, then driving isn't so bad. I drove to Southampton to see the HMS Victory, then over to Salisbury (awesome) and Stonehenge (overrated, IMO).

I went to Canterbury in a different trip (not by car), and it was awesome, but I really enjoyed spending the night there (in the Hampton Inn inside the old walls), instead of doing it as a daytrip.

I completely tore up the left side of a brand new Volvo in Ireland my first day there.
