In the early stages of planning a trip to Scotland for my son as a senior trip gift for making exceptional grades. It’ll be next summer of 2027. I’ve never been to the country. Will be me, Mrs jkyle , and my two teenage boys. They will be mostly playing diff golf courses like kings barn, trump , st Andrews , etc. I’m not a golfer so me n the wife will be looking for things to do around their tee times. Our stays will be split between Edinburgh , Aberdeen , St Andrews, and Inverness. So far my only plan is to go over to isle of Skye one day to do some sightseeing. For those that have been are there any must see places or things to do in the areas I mentioned above. Any feedback would be appreciated. Looking at a ten ish day trip. Thanks in advance

been to St A quite a few times because the daughter went to University there. Great little town with enough sites for a day and enough pubs for a lifetime.

Edinburgh - Only been once but walked down the royal mile and took in a museums and a few other things. Would go back to see all that it offers

Stirling, Balmoral, and Scone Palance are all places I've been that I thought were nice to see. Tons of scotch whiskey distilleries to check out as well.

We will be there this summer for a wedding and golf and are considering driving the NC500 for a week. Supposedly the most picturesque road in Scotland.

Went a couple years ago and played Kingsbarnes, New Course, Fairmont course, and Dumbarnie. Dumbarnie is newer but was my favorite course I played that trip.

Sweet. I’ll give it a look. Gonna pull out all the stops to try and get him a tee time for old course but from what I understand it’s the hardest tee time in the world

While in Edinburgh a side ride over to St. Andrews would be recommended.

Carnoustie is a must. Panmure is literally right next door- is where Ben Hogan practiced the week before he won the only Open he played at Carnoustie. Brora up the coast is a neat little James Braid course from 1800's, if u can't get on at Dornoch. East Lothian area is full of fun courses. Lunden is another good one. I was hoping to do the NC 500 this fall but airfare due to fuel prices is scary. A Golf Course Called Scotland by Tom Coyne is a must read for golfers found to Scotland.

Went last summer. Fantastic trip. We home based in Edinburgh for like 3-4 days. From there we did day trips to Sterling & St. Andrews. I think you could spend 2-3 days in St. Andrews; just a beautiful town. I also really enjoyed Inverness. We stayed on the river in apartments(Highland Apartments by Mansley). They were nice. Out of Inverness, we day tripped to the Isle of Skye. That was awesome, but be prepared for a lot of rain.

Be prepared for the food... Basic food is not that good, but there are some fantastic restaurants we ate at.
Edinburgh: Makar's Mash Bar, PIGGS Brunstfield (probably my favorite meal), Howee's Waterloo Place.

There's lots of Indian restaurants, which I thought was great. We ate at one that was close to our airbnb, Indian lounge Edinburgh. Pretty good.

Inverness: Johnny Foxes (great fish and chips), Mustard Seed Restaurant

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Islay is great! If you can hit Campbeltown I enjoyed that down there as well. Amazing whisky. I LOVED Islay. The big distilleries on the south side are great. I enjoyed Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, and Ardnahoe on the NE side.

Was there last month, and had been before a couple of years ago.

Seconded.

A decent high school kid will even enjoy it.

Great trip to do. Lots of castles to see and historic sights. You’ll have to drive yourself probably. Plan at least 2 to 3 days at Isle of Skye if possoble. Forget playing St. Andrews unless you’re going to drop $15 to $20K to do so for 3-4 people. The Open is there next year too. Makes it almost impossible. You just have to pick the sights you want to see in that amount of time. Sterling, Edinburgh (2 days min), Doune Castle (Monty Python), Balmoral (get tickets now for inside tour), Dunvegan Castle, Cawdor Castle, Culloden Battlefield, Urquhart Castle at Loch Ness, Dunnottar Castle, lots more to see depending on where else you want to go. Hiking Old Man of Storr on Isle Of Skye.

A few other things: The Castle in St. Andrews and Church Yard where Old Tom Morris is buried. Palace of Holyrood in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle. See the Military Tattoo is in Edinburgh when it is playing. Several museums in Edinburgh that are nice. Hike Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh for view of City. Distillery tickets sell out quickly sometimes so plan ahead.

Recovering alcoholic here. Tried to work out a hall pass for kidless trips back in 2019 in Paris. Almost ended in divorce. lol. So nah no scotch for me although that sounds like a great time.
