Where yat Lonnie?
We lived in Utah County 15yr and Cache County 10 yr before the winter inversions and summer forest fire smoke along with the altitude exacerbated my wife's asthma such that I wasn't sure she would survive another winter, so we moved back to La.
Sure do miss it.

Doubly good news-I don't have many backpacking years left, if a new hip will allow that, I'm all in

Golf after hip replacement

Posted by gungho on 6/22/26 at 6:44 pm
I'm 69 lead hip replacement and looking at replacement of lead hip (right side as a lefty) and i love to walk the course and carry clubs when it's not blazing. Anyone else with lead hip replacement? Still able to play and walk? How long was your recovery to that point? Thanks

- any of the raspberry shake places in Garden City, UT near Bear Lake in July and Aug
-Hollis Seafood Buffet in Spearsville,LA- much of the buffet is average but they do fried seafood very well
- good earlier mention on Catfish inn in Quitman, was really good many many years ago, hope it's still good

Calorie counter app

Posted by gungho on 6/12/26 at 7:40 pm
Saw an old post for LoseIt as a calorie counter app. Anyone have experience with that or recommend another? Thanks
Had never thought of freeze-drying herbs- dehydration, obviously yes. I would think freeze- drying will preserve flavor much better and longer.
I presume u don't grind them before freeze- drying?

I didn't know pine Hills is open to public. Was private CC when I lived there years ago

Yes I use a freeze dryer to dry

What freeze dryer do u use? The ones I've looked at for home use are way more expensive than I would pay to dry herbs. Have. always wanted to make freeze- dried meals for backpacking but the devices are pricey

I kind of like the Farmerville (D'Arbonne CC) layout. Ok conditioning for this area. I put Jonesboro, Farmerville, and Trails End at about the same level, although TE has 18 holes. I played a"courtesy" ($75) round at Calvert after I moved to Ruston last year, thinking about joining it, but i like to walk and no way I'm walking that course again-i doubt they'll let u play unless you're evaluating it. Played Homer decades ago, haven't since moving back here, but i can't imagine it's much of an upgrade from back then. Bernice not worth the money.

moldy smoke wood

Posted by gungho on 6/1/26 at 3:43 pm
Anyone know of a problem, taste or safety, if using smoke wood that has very minimal mold on the surface of the wood-I'm talking about a few small white or brown patches that are flat without any thickness or substance? I've read that it can release toxins, someone else told me the smoke would ruin the taste of the meat. I have a hard time believing any of that, but I'm not an expert on the subject. Thanks.

Will be 70 in Feb. Have been very active, ran 6-7 days/wk until diagnosis of hip arthritis in Feb, so relegated to walking until this came up while working out and now just getting fat. At least I can work on upper body until something else breaks down

Stubborn groin strain

Posted by gungho on 5/26/26 at 6:47 pm
Anyone ever have a groin strain? Got mine almost 4 weeks ago and very little improvement even with physical therapy last 2-3 weeks. Therapist using passive stretches plus dry needling, a-stim, and cupping. Will this ever get better? Can't hike or play golf, can barely get up into my truck at times.
Man, I'm jealous. La. native , lived in Utah about 30yr but had to move back to La. for health reasons. So miss the mtns/ weather. To those who like elsewhere, to each his own.
Practiced as family dr for 19 yr, went back at 47 to train in another specialty, now 69 and retiring.
Of course made good money as a doc but could have made tons more in different specialty and/ or private practice but always made decisions with family and time ahead of money and do not regret. Have seen numerous train wrecks along the way of those who chose the other path. Only One Person I have to please and He will not judge me on basis of my income/ net worth

Carnoustie is a must. Panmure is literally right next door- is where Ben Hogan practiced the week before he won the only Open he played at Carnoustie. Brora up the coast is a neat little James Braid course from 1800's, if u can't get on at Dornoch. East Lothian area is full of fun courses. Lunden is another good one. I was hoping to do the NC 500 this fall but airfare due to fuel prices is scary. A Golf Course Called Scotland by Tom Coyne is a must read for golfers found to Scotland.
Nasty. But maybe I haven't had "good" ones. I'm open

re: Buying a vehicle out of state

Don't forget to get inspection when u get the car. I was used to having the dealer have it done if bought in La and just forgot about it when I bought in TX and Shreveport cop nailed me for no inspection sticker
La. native but lived in Utah about 30 yr before moving back. Never thought I'd like the desert, but fell in love with it- at the right time of the year!. Agree 100% withcgrand, and others on here.
DONT MISS Hwy12. Great short, mostly flat hike off Hwy 12 to Lower Calf Creek Falls.

You can look these up, but Notom Rd on back side of Capitol Reef is a cool road, some Indian ruins along the way. Don't miss the Fiery Furnace hike in Arches. Another less crowded area is the San Rafael Swell.

I make at least one trip a year back out there.

Also Anasazi Indian State Park in Boulder is neat- last i was there, there was a very informative native lady at the desk inside
