Rome travel question, Sistine Chapel

I'm doing an Italy & Greek Isles cruise on Brilliance of the Seas from Rome to Athens on August 17.
At Rome, I'm only planning to spend 2 nights since I've been there before. I only want to see the Sistine Chapel since it was closed in preparation for the Papal Conclave for Pope Francis. I swore up and down that if I ever get back to Rome, I would make sure I go.
Issue is that it is closed for the Assumption of Mary church holiday from Thursday to Sunday. I don't care to be in Rome for 5 nights, so I booked a skip the line tour at 730am, then a 11:30 train to the port (45 minutes) to be on the ship by 4pm.
Right now, I'm supposed to land Saturday morning which gives me all day to catch up on jet lag, Sunday to go to mass at the Vatican, and explore, then Monday.
Is the Sistine Chapel alone reason enough to do this plan?

Sounds like you really want to see it, so I would think it would be great for you. I really liked the walk into the chapel, everything was beautiful. The chapel itself was small and it was pretty crowded when we were there.

It is a "I can say I've been to the Sistine Chapel" type of experience. Unless you have a limited group tour you are herded through like cattle as you are trying to view something well above your head while trying not to bump into the person next to you doing the same.
Also, I just saw that they are doing some restoration work on the ceiling so there will be scaffolding and netting in some portions. They are cleaning the layer of salt from tourist sweat that has filmed onto it.

Yeah, why not?
It is really something to see, one of the great works of art in the world.
We saw it in conjunction with a tour of the Vatican Museum.
You are not supposed to take pictures in there. You are supposed to stand there silently and admire the art. People talk and take pictures anyway.
Every five minutes or so the guard asks for silence and orders the cameras to be put up. People comply for about 30 seconds.
I got to attend Easter Sunday mass at the Vatican on 2016.

Huge let down if you are expecting a solemn experience.
There are no pews in there. It's a wide open room just jam packed with people standing shoulder to shoulder.
They basically manuever you from one end to the other so you have a limited time.
The other posters are correct about no photos and supposedly no talking. Tourists will be tourists and it's a cluster. I could have done without it.

It was like herding cows through the pens, but I'm glad I saw it. I think you should go just to do mass at the Vatican and I'm not even Catholic. It's a Holy place and you should go.

I agree with everything, everyone has already said.
However, the Sistine Chapel is amazing. I still don't believe a man painted it.
It is darker than you expect. You will not have an awe that lingers with you the rest of your life, but it is really cool... and if you've always wanted to see it, you have to!
The tour of all the art collection in the Vatican leading up to it is awesome.
The rooms throughout the Vatican are almost as cool as the chapel.
The tour inside St. Peters afterwards is also worth it.
If you are going to do anything for a day in Rome. The Vatican tour (including the chapel) is the best way to spend it.

This was my experience too. You are led on a tour and it’s a while before you enter the room. Like others said, it was crowded but I forgot about the crowd when I looked up. There’s the feeling of seeing something in person that you’ve seen hundreds of time in books and videos but there’s also the aspect of it being an incredible work of art.
Do it!

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. Like I said before, I've seen the rest of the Vatican, St Peter's, and museum. Since the Sistine Chapel is closed on the Thursday-Sunday before the cruise and I dont want to stay 5 nights, I can make it work to be on the earliest skip the line tour on Monday and still make it to the ship by 430. It will be a tight schedule, but worth it.
I actually looked into landing on Wednesday and seeing Sistine that afternoon, then go up to Siena, but the horse races in the square are also that weekend and race/hotel packages have to be bought at least a year out...

We were lucky enough to see the Sistine Chapel inn 2009. Our guide was well known by the guards at the Vatican and was at the very front of the line when it opened. He told us we would skip looking at the two museums that you go through prior to the Chapel and we would "speed walk" to the Chapel then circle back and catch everything that we had initially missed including a second trip through the Chapel. When we reached the Chapel they were just turning the lights on. My wife, myself and our guide spent 20 minutes in the Chapel by ourselves. It was truly incredible to be able to walk all through the Chapel and see all of the works and be able to hear our guide. And while you are not supposed to take pictures, our guide was able to take a number of us by ourselves. When we circled back though, the Chapel was packed, like going through the student section to get into an LSU football game. You just had to squeeze through the crowd in the Chapel and forget about hearing anything. Afterwards my wife told me whatever we paid for our guide, we it was worth every penny.

St Peter's, and museum. Since the Sistine Chapel
I felt like St Peter's was a lot more impressive personally. Have you done the Dome tour of St Peter's?
We went to rome last fall. Did St Peter's and then the dome tour the first day on our day of arrival, it was a ton but wore out butts out to sleep well that night.
Then we did the Museum and Sistine Chapel tour later. I wouldn't say the Sistine Chapel completely stuck out from everything else in the museum, but its where the cardinals meet to vote for the pope for a reason. Its incredible, if for any other reason just the amount of works in one room.

I found it odd you can't take pictures in the chapel. It's the only part of the Vatican that's open too public that you can't. I did the Vip tour with dinner and our group was only 12 people and we were the only ones in the chapel. Also the last ones that day.

One reason I can think of is that there's a lot of people in a small darker space, so if flash photography was allowed it would be like a miami night club in there I would imagine.

Sistene Chapel is hands down the greatest thing I have ever seen
Seems like everyone here is talking about how small and crowded it is. No doubt it's small but i guess I lucked out and when I went it was not crowded at all and I was able to sit on a pew and comfortably take it all in
So I'll defer to them but for me it was magnificent

It's more that people looking up are already not really looking out for the tour group moving in their direction with everyone in the group looking up. When they're concentrating on taking a picture, they're even more likely to bump others and stumble.
