Ireland golf trip - who has been?

Looking at an Ireland golf trip. If you have been:
1. Did you plan it yourself or use a tour service? I am leaning towards planning it myself.
2. Did you golf on the east coast or the west? My limited research makes it seem like they are pretty different parts of the country.
3. Any must see sites / things to do besides golf and hitting the pub?

1. It's very easy to drive in Ireland. My only concern would be to get a car with a proper boot (trunk) and not a hatchback to avoid your clubs getting jacked.
3. Search up some Ireland threads; you have to change to search from the default of seven days to a year or two, and you'll find them. There is a dump truck of stuff to do no matter where you golf.

Going in 3 weeks. Not a golf trip, but 2 weeks driving around Ireland. Very excited.

Haven't been on a golf trip, but have been 3 times for general sightseeing. My 1st choice would be to stay in the southwest near the coast. Plenty of great courses within an hour or 2. And lots to see for the non-golfers or your days off.
Killarney is a good place to start or to stay at - good options for lodging, food, and pubs. Beyond that it will be small towns that are just as nice.
Courses - try to do Lahinch, and then look at Ballybunion, Killarney, Tralee, Doonbeg, or Waterville.

Stringmusic had some good thoughts. Others in N. Ireland: Royal County Down, Royal Portrush.
A bit of a drive but Carne on the NW coast of ROI is amazing- look it up. Read Ancestral Links about Carne. U can play County Sligo and Enniscrone on the way. Plus the Wild Atlantic Way is cool. Cliffs of Moher and Rock of Cashel are touristy but worth it. Giant's Causeway is neat but probably not worth going out of your way. Read A Course Called Ireland by Tom Coyne. Dingle Peninsula is supposed to have great courses but weather not great when i went. Friendliest people you'll ever meet.

Two courses that I have played at that I can highly recommend Killarney Golf & fishing club in the SW of Ireland. and The Royal Dublin Golf Club in Dublin.

Went a couple of years ago and played Trump Doonbeg. Course might be the most beautiful I have ever played and the hotel was spectacular. If you want to see the course, the DP tour is playing there this week.
