Longer vacation - One combined checked bag, essentials in carryons. My carryon is a one bagger so I can roll the checked as needed w/ carryon on my back.
Shorter vacation - Just carryons. Might one bag it with Tom Bihn Aeronaut if it won't be too hot to do backpack carry most of the way. Probably trying to maximize time so avoiding any checked bags is a priority.
Business - Rolling carryon.
In law/wife's family trips - Check all that shite, who cares if it gets there or if I have to wait at arrival.

Really depends on several things. I'f we're driving, I'm not as concerned about packing light. I'd rather have what I need when I get there, than have to improvise, or run out and buy something.
Flying, I pack as light as possible. Sometimes that's not checking a bag, sometimes it is. Summer, I can usually get everything into a carry-on. Winter, I usually have to check a bag if flying to a cold destination.
And none of this applies if the wife is going with me, because she's going to overpack no matter the circumstances.

Short trip, long trip, doesn’t matter, I’m checking the largest bag from my luggage set as soon as I walk in the airport. No lugging it through security, terminals, bathrooms, restaurants, gift shops. No jostling for overhead space and/or having to retrieve it upon arrival, fighting the flow of morons unwilling to forego 15 extra seconds to deboard orderly. For $30, someone else can worry about it.
And since I’m paying for it, my suitcase is jam-packed with shite I’m not gonna need or use. Do I need 100 q-tips? Umbrella? Jacket and rain jacket? Tennis shoes and topsiders even though I’ll only wear the boots I wore on the plane? Probably not, but I’ve never had to run out to buy something I was I had packed either. I nearly always pack a fan for noise and fill negative space with as many bottled waters as possible.
I hate fumbling through overstuffed carryons so my backpack is minimally packed: iPad, power banks, sunglasses, plane snacks, pens/paper.
Brand is no matter to me. It’ll get destroyed eventually. As long as it has at least one working zipper and something making it easy to spot on the carousel, it’s done its job. Hell, for a good while I was using the cheapest rolling bag from the Maui Walmart that we bought just to bring back all the shite we bought on the island. The Dockers set I got for graduation has held up well though.

So does anyone utilize packing cubes or ranger rolling of clothing or combos of clothing in order to maximize space?

Unless absolutely necessary, I never check a bag. I just like to be able to go straight to TSA and not have to wait on my bag after I land.
When I travel from Chicago (most-often SF for work), I never check a bag. However, I almost always haul beer from where I am, so I'll check it on the way back. No monetary cost and it only adds ~15 minutes in Uber/Lyft or the train.

Another questino that this thread has brought up:
- When hauling something like this back...Do you wrap it up in clothing or something to protect it? I'm assuming you're transporting bottles.

If I do a week with friends, I pack a small backpack. If I travel two days with my wife, we check several bags.

I may get bit in the arse at some point, but I've never had issue rolling cans into clothing. I do bubble wrap bottles and use electrical tape around the cap, so it doesn't get caught on anything.

Ziploc bag, then bubble wrap. Center bottom of suitcase, padded by your most expendable dirty clothes. Haven't broken a bottle yet, though I did lose a gluhwein christmas mug when my better half forgot that he'd wrapped it in socks and tossed it into the washer.

I'm impatient, so if I land somewhere and want to get started that wait for luggage just kills me. Plus, I like beating everyone off the plane to bathrooms,
How's this a problem with checking a bag?

I have an old swiss army carry on bag and an osprey backpack/laptop bag.
I travel a fair amount, but have not used a full suitcase in a decade, even for Europe trips.

I use cubes. Solid space savers, but I tend to group alike items and end up just cramming everything in suitcase for return instead of packing neatly. I feel like if you had several of the larger cubes, packing a day or two’s worth of full outfits would keep things neat. Those tiny bastards are good for nothing but socks and underwear.

This, never check, I can go to India for a week with a carry-on, you can always launder clothes

This is me exactly except for Tumi brief. I use a Tumi messenger. I do have the same exact Alpha carryon with separate toiletries items/tech gear permanently packed.

I roll pants and knit shirts, then put into cubes. It keeps the suitcase more organized, esp for a long trip. As things get sort-of dirty or in true need of washing, I swap them to other compartments of the case so things stay fresh. I keep a plastic kitchen garbage bag stuck in an inside pocket in case something gets truly foul or wet and I need to repack it up anyway.

I am a minimalist.
Head to toe (make a checklist)
Concerning toiletries and meds, if I can get it there...I don't bring them unless it is brand specific. There are pharmacies everywhere.
Extra charger, plus an old phone etc. That can use the same sim card.
I open a second savings account. If my debit card gets lost, I transfer money the other account online and keep on having a good time.

I only take the most necessary, but my wife always pulls the whole wardrobe is behind her :D

All depends on where I'm going and what I plan to do.

1 bag for 3 week trips. 5 pairs of socks & undies, 3 t-shirts, 2 collared shirts, 2 pairs of pants and toiletries. I also have a small backpack for my laptop, I usually have to work, and miscellaneous small stuff. Wear a jacket on the plane
