Are you a minimalist? A one-bagger type? Tell me about weekend trips (flying or to the hunting/fishing camp), business trips, family trips or vacations?

From one-bagging to Princess Vespa's luggage on Space Balls...How do you pack for travel? What's your motivation? What do you use? Does the brand matter? Why or why not?

Unless absolutely necessary, I never check a bag. I just like to be able to go straight to TSA and not have to wait on my bag after I land.

Got a new carry on from Travel Away for Christmas and already love it.

We always pack way too heavily.

I use the same Osprey backpack set for everything.

I'm impatient, so if I land somewhere and want to get started that wait for luggage just kills me. Plus, I like beating everyone off the plane to bathrooms, transportation, immigration, etc.

I never check, unless I’m headed home and have liquid souvenirs or gifts I just couldn’t refuse (like a half case of wine, or liter of olive oil). One wheelie bag plus a decent sized cabin bag, with my daily handbag tucked inside.

I’m a proponent of the capsule wardrobe for travel.....specific pieces that mix and match, can be layered, dressed up/down, and are hand washable if necessary. Two pairs of shoes, max, and a couple of silk or wool scarves depending on season. Packing for active/adventure is another story......but I do try to rent gear rather than pack my own when possible.

Always try to make do with just a carryon unless it’s a two week or more trip and we might be dealing with differing weather conditions.

What has worked for me:

I always dress decently for commercial air travel.

Wingtips (or equivs.), slacks, dress shirt, and sport coat.

Only a Filson or Briggs and Riley backpack if I can get away with it.

A carry-on Briggs & Riley Wheeled Wardrobe (Link) for longer trips.

I have my hotel launder my clothes so I get multiple wearings out of those items.

Good Japanese hotels have wonderful in-house laundry service.

I do hand wash my morning workout clothes in my hotel room so I only have to bring one set.

I hate checking luggage.

I’ve had checked luggage lost, delayed, damaged, and pilfered.

I use an international sized Tumi 4 wheel Alpha carryon and an expandable Tumi brief. If I can’t fit something in either of those, it’s just not necessary. For driving distance travel, I’ll bring in hang up clothes as well.

Packing is pretty straight forward, I keep a shaving kit in my travel gear separate from my permanent home stuff. (It’s already packed and ready). Same with phone/iPad/laptop chargers, they permanently live in my briefcase. I travel a lot and got sick of having to re-pack things all the time. Clothes are trip specific and self explanatory. Obviously easier to pack for car travel with extra hang ups, jackets, and trunk booze.

My wife uses my Amazon History to play Santa. She picked up on me lusting after Mystery Ranch Bags and had St. Nick bring me of their new 3-Way Briefcases. I am hooked. I already went and got one of their Urban Assault packs.

But I’m trying to put together a plan for trips to layer and pack clothing and mix stuff up so I can minimize the items and yet maximize options. Not so much for trips to the hunting or fishing camp. Those are 4-5 day max with specialized gear/clothes that i don’t give a shite about as much as extended trips, business travel or a trip where “civilian,” clothing is a bit more important.

It’s an interesting exercise mentally as I’ve never bothered before. But a trip to Vegas last week had me having to jump on a tram, then go to the very last baggage claim area just to get a single bag.

Just not worth it to me going forward. I can work smarter and deal with less bullshite.

If we are traveling via air we are usually going somewhere tropical. So just a few bathing suits, outfit per night for dinner and then the essentials. Definitely only one suitcase for sure. For my honeymoon, our resort offers two free rounds of golf so I will check my one bag and then my golf clubs since we are flying Southwest and can check 2 bags free.

But regardless I'm usually just a one bag guy. No need for anything else.

As minimal as possible. For air travel, I only check bags on the way home because I no longer want to lug it around. For weekend trips, I usually limit it to a backpack. For anything longer, I use a 22" rollerbag I have had for more than 10 years and has seen millions of miles. If my wife is travelling, we usually share the roller bag for weekend trips. My wife likes to overpack, but she is slowly breaking the habit. I do have a couple rolling duffle bags that have been used when we brought camping and diving gear to Hawaii once.

Contents-wise for clothing, I typically stick with one pair of jeans, one pair of pants and multiple shirts, mostly synthetic material when I can. Synthetic fabric tends to not hold odors. I wear the same collared shirt and synthetic pants on the flights, round trip. For warm destinations I bring two pair of shorts and no jeans or pants. I always have a change of underclothes in my backpack (fits under the seat) and toiletries in the event I am forced to check my carry bag. I have never traveled to a place where I was unable to wash clothes if needed. For underclothes, I will bring a travel packet of Tide to wash them in the sink (if needed). I tend to stick with neutral colors and patterns so I'm able to mix everything over the course of the week. I do pack plenty of socks however, but those stuff down into every nook and cranny of the bag.

When we go camping, I pack even less. I like to wear swim trunks with plenty of pockets. They pack down small, don't hold odors and dry quickly if we get wet or I need to wash them out.

One bag, checked. Rather than spend a lot of time ironing the wrinkles out of clothes, I also travel with a bottle of this:

I check my bag because I prefer getting to the airport very early to avoid the various things that can go wrong when in a rush. The last thing I want to do is drag a bag around the airport with me. I’m ok with with waiting a few minutes for my bag to arrive. I can work or read while patiently waiting.

this. I travel every other week for ~2 nights via train, and then again ~2 times a month by air and having all this ready to go makes it easy. I even have a spare set of running clothes for my travel.

As a family, we travel about 5 times a year by air and another half dozen road trips a year varying from weekend trips to 10+ day multi country trips. I'm so set in my packing ways that I still have the same rolling carry on and backpack even with family trips.
We've gotten good about travel with no check in luggage. We're a family of 5 currently in Spain for 9 days with no checked bags!

Depends on the method of travel.

If driving for a hunting or fishing trip, I'll pack pretty heavy for the camp site, then minimalize my travel pack / boat gear for the times we leave camp.

If flying for business or pleasure I try to never check a bag if possible. Fold and roll all clothing. If in a hotel, they will have an iron I can use when I get there. I can take a 4 day business trip and only bring a standard laptop backpack as my suitcase.

I pack light with a carry on and personal item. Shoes and bulky jackets throw me off my game though

I would say I pack with expert efficiency. I always have one bag and one backpack. In my bag I always keep a toiletry bag that has a duplicate of everything I need at home. I then pack the clothes I need but recognize what I will need/wear vs what is excess. My backpack has my laptop, headphones, gadgets, and keys.

Like others have said... I try not to ever check a bag unless absolutely necessary. I took probably close to 75 trips (some were multi-destination) this year for work and can only recall checking a bag 3 times... each of which was due to bringing a bottle of liquor or beer home as a gift.

Ski trip = bags are stuffed to the max, I hate being cold
Trip to remote island = minimal clothes, lotsa clean undies
Business trip = wear jacket on plane and cram all my shirts into a small bag; I iron them in the hotel room

We keep google docs for various trips, on what we need ot bring. And then we add/remove based on what the trip actually requires. It works awesome and enables us to forget less stuff.

if I travel internationally, I pack very minimalist. If I am traveling domestically, I try to pack light but sometimes I need to check a bag (such as bringing costumes to mardi gras).

I have a travel specific wardrobe of quick dry clothing, and things that pack light.

eta: Our goal is to be out of our home for 6 weeks every year. In 2018, we were gone for a total of 7 weeks. 2019 is probably not going to hit 6 weeks, but we will be gone for 4.
