Good base for Amalfi Coast.

Planning way ahead here but looking at a trip for July 2025 to Italy. The plan is to fly into Rome. Spend 2-3 days and then train or drive down to Amalfi Coast for 6-7 days. Trying to pin down a good base for Amalfi coast area. The best value is in Sorrento from what I can tell but that’s not technically on the Amalfi coast. Positano looks fantastic but a bit more than I want to spend on lodging. Giving Praiano a look as well as Furore. Never been to this region so any input or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Positano.
We spent a week there a few years ago and loved it.
If the cost is prohibitive, I would look into staying in the Town of Amalfi which is another good base. It is a bigger and slightly less picturesque town with probably more affordable hotel rooms.
In Positano, we got a room with a 24'X24' private terrace overlooking the hill in the foreground and the Mediterranean in the background which may have been the most incredible view I have ever had from a hotel room. The reason it was not super expensive was because the hotel is a little hike up the hill from the town center, and we went early in the spring.

We went over the summer & stayed at great airbnb in Amalfi. We took the water taxi to Capri one day, Positano the next. Amalfi is a really cool village, unlike any place I’ve ever seen. Highly recommend.

Positano was really nice but yeah very expensive. Though there are adjacent towns with well priced Airbnbs. I would search Positano and then zoom around the area.
Positano was amazing but that walk from the sea up the mountain is killer.
Still really neat and worth the trip.

Yeah I’ve noticed some better prices a bit up the hill in the adjacent village of monterperuso (pretty sure I butchered the spelling. ). So I’m gonna give that a look. I really like the location of Praiano and seems convenient to Positano and other places. Wife and kids are hung up on a particular airbnb in Furore. Furore looks conveniently located on the map but when I gmap it to anywhere it seems it’s disconnected from the main drag on the coast. Not sure if it’s a deal where we could walk down and bus/moped it to other places. I’d like to take a day trip to pompei and Naples. A day trip to capri. Other than that just kinda explore with some boating activities mixed in. Thank you for the replies.

I stayed in sorrento. There is a local train that runs from Naples to sorrento. One of the stops on the way is Pompeii. From the train station in sorrento, their is a public bus that runs down the Amalfe coast to positano and amalfi. There is also ferry service to Capri. But it's what's right for you.

Pompeii blew my mind and can't be missed. Sadly when we went it was pouring and we didn't want to cancel so we walked it with Panchos on.
It amazed me how they had so many shops and houses preserved.

I stayed in Praiano and loved it. Easy walk from most of the hotels to the bus stop. It is a much quieter town than Positano or Amalfi, but still had a few great restaurants and such. Positano is the next one over, so the views from the Restaurants in Praiano are the best on the coast, overlooking both Positano and the Sea.
If you enjoy hiking, you can walk from Praiano up a ton of steps and start the "Path of the Gods" hike that leads you through the countryside to Positano.

Same. Loved the view of the bay and Vesuvius.

We used Sorrento as well as our base for our time in Amalfi.

I stayed in Sorrento also.
The bus ride was interesting to say the least. Mopeds pulling out in front of the bus, blind corners that can barely fit even one car, and the cliffs…100s of yards straight down with about a two foot rail. I remember thinking “nobody dies on these buses, I would’ve heard or read that.” Yeah right.

Wife and I went in 2019 and used Sorrento as our base. We also absolutely loved Sorrento on its own as well. Made multiple trips Positano, day trip to Capri, and Pompeii.

We loved Sorrento and also could take the train to Naples to move back around. Beautiful buildings and nice views. Can still access Positano or Amalfi via bus or Ferry

Really appreciate the replies. Lots of +1’s for Sorrento. Seems to be a lot of value to be had there in lodging. Will give it serious consideration.

We stayed a week in this house in Masa Lubrense last summer(last week of June) - LINK
We wanted to stay away from the madness of the Amalfi coast. We had two families with two kids each and had more than enough room, and didn't even use the 5th bedroom. The host is amazing. He'll be your in house chef if you want and will book all outings/transportation for you. He'll even grocery shop for you. We took the train from Rome to Naples and he set up our transportation to the house and back when we left. You definitely don't want to drive.
If you really want to be in the middle of all the crowds on the southern part of the peninsula, go for it, but this is a great option if you want to have a little more laid back stay. This house is a little farther out toward the tip of the peninsula, about 20 minutes from Sorrento, depending on traffic, and that traffic can be terrible in the summer. Every driver we had said it's gotten worse over the last few years due to the number of people visiting now. The greater Sorrento area is a better option, imo, but it's up to what you want to do. This house is directly above Punta Masa Lubrense if you want to look at a map. Amazing place.

I just spent a week in Praiano in August.
1. Take the train or a private car. DO NOT rent a car and drive. Just don't.
2. Praiano if you want a laid back experience. There isn't a ton to do there besides eat, sleep and chill out.
3. Positano or Sorrento if you want a busier, more touristy experience with tons of shopping and people.
4. Go to Capri for a day trip if you really want to shop a ton and be around a million tourists. I went, glad I did, won't go back.
It's really that simple. Amalfi Coast is one of my favorite places in the world. You will have a great time either way.

We stayed on Capri with the rest of the beautiful people.
Pro tip. Spend your time up higher in Anacapri. It's much quieter up there. The view from the mountain top is spectacular.

We walked up there. It was like the Bataan Death March and there isn't anywhere to go but up or back down once you get started. A warning sign ("you are about to depart on a 4.5 km walk") would have been a nice touch.

Weird. We took a very crowded bus up to Anacapri and a cable car up to the mountain top. I will say that we walked the trail back down to Anacapri and yes, it was an interesting little hike.
