Seeking vacation ideas. Wife and kids love Destin/Orange Beach/PCB but I'd like to splurge a bit on something different this year. Targeting late June but timeframe is somewhat flexible.

Budget of $10-$15K, wife and kids (14, 16) are unvaxxed, kids do not have passports. We've traveled to most Gulf Coast beaches, Myrtle Beach, Colorado, Huntington Beach, and pretty much any vacation spot within driving distance of Louisiana. Wife and kids love the beach but I'm open to anything. Any ideas given budget, passport, and vaccination status?

If you are willing to spend that much then get some passports and go somewhere in the Caribbean.

What's the turnaround time on passports these days?

Also, have HHonors and IHG diamond status with around 200K points each.

Might be worth a look at Lake Tahoe. A few resorts in the area, and also a lot of VRBO’s. There are beaches there, and really close to mountains. We were planning a trip there summer of 2020 then Covid hit. Our budget was considerably less and there were still plenty of options.

Agreed. $10-15k is a healthy budget why waste it on a trip in driving distance.

Lake Tahoe is an interesting idea, never been there. Anything else within driving distance?

I've got 7 free rental days with National so could use them for the trip. Again, budget is $10-15K but I'm not opposed to spending less

I am currently planning a trip for this summer for my three boys. Ages 6-13. Flying into Vegas and driving to Bryce Canyon, Zion, Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon and finishing up in Sedona before flying out of Phoenix. We typically do Destin/30A every summer and excited to try something new! Your kids' ages seem great for a trip like this.

St John USVI , no need for a passport and only need a negative covid test within 5 days of travel uploaded to their travel portal.

Look to stay in Cruz Bay, great restaurants and the north shore beaches are excellent.

Me , the wife and kids (14,12,10) leave in a month to go back.

I've been really interested in this trip lately, any particular blog posts, videos, travel guides you'd recommend for a good primer on a vacation here?

Fly into Phoenix, rent a VRBO / Air BNB in Sedona, go see Flagstaff and the grand canyon, go off-road ATV'ing, cliff jumping, hiking, there's a trout farm you can catch your own dinner, they have a couple wineries nearby.

I’ve never been either, and we hadn’t gotten very far in our planning when Covid hit. We had considered driving into Reno one day, but it looked like there was plenty around that era to keep us busy. Flights were pretty reasonable into Sacramento.

If you want to stay in America.

How outdoorsy are yall?

Lake Tahoe is really nice. The redwoods are amazing IMHO. I have been to them and the grand canyon several times. Stay in Tahoe and rent a SUV to drive to the redwoods national park. They filmed part of the original star wars there. Hwy 299 is windy and cool. Then stay there a night or two.

Northern Michigan is beautiful in the summer. Look up the Traverse City area or Alpena on the Huron side. Swimming, lots of wildlife, wineries, breweries, shipwrecks, hiking. And bonfire weather at night!

We have been to St John numerous times, but, originally I did research on Facebook groups (St John Travel and Life is a good one) google searching articles and asking questions here. Check the pinned posts on this board, some good posts on this website.

VABuckeye and some others have a lot of good info / insight to USVI and BVI. If you have questions about St John you could get a lot of answers here.

Agreed. With that budget you could easily do this. Wife and I are taking the kids in July.

We are going to coastal Maine and cape cod the first couple weeks of June. Cheap flights from msy to Boston. Making it about a two week trip. First time trip for me but lots of fellas on here recommend it. Will report back and let ya know how we like it. I’ve been gulf of Mexico’d out for a while now so we have been venturing out to some diff stuff over the last few years.

We’re eyeballing a California trip for next summer. Fly into Los Angeles . Do some scenic driving up cali coast up to Monterey Bay Area. Slide over to Yosemite for a few days also. Maybe something to also consider. That’s a solid budget to pretty well do whatever you want domestically.

Love the fly to Vegas and drive up into Utah for National Parks idea. Did this with the nephew in 2020. Stayed in St George, UT and did day trips to Zion and Bruce Canyon. We had a great time.

I suggest making GC and Sedona their own trips. But Arizona is great to explore.

Yosemite is only a 4 hr drive from Tahoe. I’d def take 3-4 days in Yosemite. Then chill out at a resort in Tahoe.

Chicago is awesome, too. A ton to do there. Book a hotel off of the CTA and you won’t need to rent a car.

Texas Hill Country. Stay in San Antonio. There’s theme parks: Fiesta Texas, Sea World, and Schlitterbahn (New Braunfels). Float the Comal. Alamo/Riverwalk. Hyatt Regency and Marriott Hill Country resorts are super nice and within your budget. Also check out Hyatt’s Lost Pines resort outside of Austin. You can day trip into Austin or the Hill Country for the scenery/star gazing, etc.

If your kids are into Theme parks, check out Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. Roller coaster capital of the world.

This.

The best family vacation for young me was a similar itinerary in 1971, without the flight in/out of Vegas.

Utah is wonderful.

Yellowstone/Grand Tetons or Utah National Parks. Kids that age will love the outdoors and the hiking around. Beautiful scenery.

Stayed there in a beachfront villa at the Westin last year with my wife and two kids. Was great!
