My friend and his wife are wanting to go to NO to celebrate a birthday, or anniversary…not sure which. He wants to stay within walking distance of places they are going to go. Any suggestions for best places to stay on Bourbon or in the FQ?

Hotel Monteleone if you don't mind paying for it. Not on Bourbon but like 1 block away.
Crown Plaza is nice too or at least last time I was there. Not sure I'd wander down Canal late these days though.

Where are the places they are wanting to walk to?
Stay at the Royal Sonesta if they insist on being in Bourbon.
For a special occasion the Windsor Court would be better and it’s not a far walk from most of the quarter

This is a real cool place, only 2-3 stories tall, great courtyard and a cool bar inside. Also rooms are nice as well.
Hotel Mazarin

Get a balcony room at the Chateau LeMoyne. Holiday Inn. Not the Monteleone , but clean, convenient and can’t beat the location.

There's no universe where I would stay anywhere on Bourbon Street, personally.

My wife and I just recently spent a 3 day weekend in New Orleans. I think it's the last time we will be back until (if ever) they clean that place up, start prosecuting criminals, hire police officers, and handle the homeless problem.
We stayed at the Cambria. It was a very cool place. After checking in, we were just chatting with a hotel employee who advised that it didn't matter that we parked in a monitored lot; it was 50/50 our car would be broken into. Sure enough, mine along with another 10 all had driver side windows smashed. They didn't get anything because I moved everything into the room safe. Still a pain in the arse and cost me $$$ to deal with.
Also, on our last night there, we wanted to have a drink at our hotel bar which was really nice, but it was closed. We were informed that the bar tender had been pistol whipped and beaten within an inch of his life the prior morning while walking back to his home after his shift. Dude showed me a picture of this man in his hospital bed. It was BAD.
We ubered everywhere we went so we could avoid any "bump ins" with the rubbish. Every driver, every patron, every employee at ever place we went all spoke the same of New Orleans. They all said that it's a terrible place to be since there are no consequences for criminal action.
I would recommend Frenchman Street over Bourbon for sure. Uber everywhere (check plates). Tell your friend to be careful. Wishing the best.
