Best destination south of the border without threat of violence?

anywhere in mexico? further south? one of the islands?
whats currently a good destination for a family with a minimum of hassle and dont feel like i need to keep my head on a swivel or the resort is going to kill me with carbon monoxide while i'm sleeping.

I felt completely safe the entire time I was in Mexico City. It’s an incredible city.

Mexico City is safe and world class. If you're into offshore fishing, Cabo is outstanding.

Costa Rica FTW
I've been there a bunch and all over the backroads in a 4x4 and never felt threatened.
I'll admit I've heard that there's wrong parts of the City of San Jose and I've avoided those areas.

Isla Mujeres or Isla Holbox if you're that paranoid. Cabo as well. Stay on the beaten path and don't be stupid and Mexico is pretty safe for Americans.

It is if you stay in the right neighborhoods. Lots to see and I liked it, especially the archeology museum which is as good as any museum I've seen.
Oaxaca overall feels safer and is a lot more laid back than Mexico City. You can get a very nice hotel in Oaxaca for not much over $50/night. It's got some elevation and low humidity so is pretty comfortable. Cool nights, can be hot in the afternoon but not humid.
South of Oaxaca is Huatulco, a beach town that I liked. Felt very safe. It's still fairly small but is developing with a road under construction to the airport. It seems to be largely Canadians visiting. A nice alternative to other Mexico beach destinations.

If we're discussing Mexican cities to visit, then I want to recommend Puebla. Its historic center is one of the best in Mexico. People will tell you that it's the best place to experience "Spanish" Mexico, while Oaxaca is the best to experience "indigenous" Mexico.
I've been twice and really enjoyed it -- it's perfect for a long weekend. Puebla is not that far of a drive from Mexico City (less than two hours from the airport), but it also has its own airport and you can fly there on United from Houston, which is what I did.
Besides the amazing historical center, there's an great car museum at the Audi factory there, and it's a short daytrip (only 4 miles) to Cholula and the amazing pyramid there.
And, yes, Puebla is a very safe city.

Puebla is great for history and culture. Beach locations are also safe for families.

Costa Rica, Caymans, Aruba are the ones that immediately come to mind. Maybe Turks and Caicos?

Puerto Vallarta is pretty safe; geography limits the roads in and out of the area which has kept the cartels out for the most part.
I always feel really safe in Belize.
Second the ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao

Great choices, and also Cozumel. Just don't try to buy drugs or do anything shady and you will be fine. Much safer than new orleans or baton rouge.

West coast of Costa Rica, no issues flying in through Liberia and taking a resort bus. Probably felt like the overall safest country in central America.
Roatan in Honduras is good too, although we were stopped the "Army" on our way back to our villa on the north side (presumably for some low level extortion.) My ex MIL (from mainland Honduras told me to STFU and she'd do the talking, and we were back at the villa five minutes later.) We were staying well outside the tourist area that is on the bottom half of the island (we got eggs from a village that didn't seem to have power to it.) Do *not* go to mainland Honduras unless you have family there. Full stop. The extended family tried to convince me to go to Tegus/San Pedro by swearing they'd give me firearm when I landed. Not a good sign. But Roatan is OK.
All three are direct sub three hour flights from Houston on United.

San Ignacio Resort in Belize. They pick you up at the airport and get you out of Belize City which is not a place to hang around. Then after your stay, they get you back to the airport safely.
It is inland, so no beaches. But you can zipline, go cave tubing, visit mayan ruins, MUST GO TO ATM CAVE, horseback riding, birding, etc. You can walk all around the little town and be safe. There is a farmer's market that is cool to go to. Beautiful hotel, clean and safe, and the people are great. Don't need a car if you go there because you can just pay for your excursions and someone else will drive you. There is also a little casino a few feet away from the hotel.
Research the ATM Cave if you have kids that are old enough to go on that great adventure. They (and you) will never forget it. If you love outdoors and adventure, you will love the San Ignacio area.
If you are looking for nightlife and five star dining, you will want to go somewhere else.

Probably gonna do belize this year. Was about to book last year but swapped to roatan last minute.
Also not many people have heard about it but curacao is a great destination. Very safe island, not an all inclusive spot though. If you like venturing around its a great spot the island is very safe. Great food, great beaches, great snorkeling. I really liked it there.

Small time drug dealer was trying to get into the game into the Cancun area. Rival followed him over on jet ski. Too him out. No collateral damage
At least he waited until it was a small island instead of doing it in Cancun where they were hundreds of people around

I've never felt unsafe in Cabo, Cancun, Cozumel or Puerto Vallarta. Going to Mexico City next week so that will be interesting. I've only done Mexico beach trips.
