Carry on only if I can get away with it, but my bag easily fits. I’ve had checked bags lost/delayed multiple times, and more than the cost, I don’t want the headache. I think the issue overall, is the general population is less courteous and less self aware than I’ve ever seen. It seems like the decline in decency has accelerated over the last 10 years.

How so? Carry on makes everything quicker and more efficient. No waiting in long lines to drop off luggage, no hoping they don’t lose it, no waiting to pick it up.
I never check a bag unless I’m going somewhere for a week or more and it makes life insanely easier IMO

At least double that. But the airlines deserve the most blame in this overhead luggage stupidity. They created this system with charges for checking luggage. And then cut down their schedule until nearly every flight is full. There is zero chance of having enough carry on space.
And yes, more people on the plane are entitled assholes which makes it that much worse.

Backpack (personal item) and checked bag only
This should be required of all passengers. Airlines should charge extra for overhead bin storage & make checked bags completely free.

Pre-board tests and weight limits would be better for flight experience than anything
And the problem isn't the planes or processes, its American Society. Fly anywhere else, especially through Asia and you have 0 of the issues people are complaining about.

Have you somehow managed to avoid Indians hauling tote bags of crap onto the plane after wrapping a hundred kilos worth of cheap Chinese stuff they bought overseas to send back home as checked luggage?
The worst cabin post flight I've ever seen was a LH flight full of Indians on the way to FRA. Newspapers strewn about the economy cabin, kids running wild, etc.

Yup, never had a single issue.
I've done prob 14 or so flight within Asia. Guess I got lucky, but 0 issues. Everyone respectful, decently dressed, not overweight, efficient.

I've said it for years - everyone should have to check bags. Those who pay extra or sit in premium cabins should be the ones allowed to bring bags aboard. That would fix so many problems. The poors can stand at the baggage claim while the OT baws are walking straight to the Ubers.

Don't know how she packed it, but wife had us take a carry-ons to Europe for a week+

Geez, I don't think I could even do that... I mean, my 10 pir of underwear in case I shite myself every day and twice on a few would take up half a carry on.

My current carry-on's are older and have to be on their side...I am not checking baggage if I don't need to...

Blame the government. When airlines include the cost of a checked bag in the ticket, there's a federal excise tax that they have to pay. But those tickets don't apply to ancillary items, so if they charge separately for a checked bag, then there's no tax on that amount.

Great for you! Are you a young adult male? I’m a youngish adult male. I actually use a rolling duffle that has a shoulder strap.
Now, do older men, kids, and almost all women. They aren’t carrying their shite.
Everyone here that suggests all luggage gets checked simply doesn’t understand the amount of time this would add not just one time but:
1.) huge line to check luggage
2.) huge delay for baggage handlers to load luggage
3.) huge delay for baggage handlers to unload luggage
4.) huge delay to pick up all baggage at baggage claim
ETA: you are taking 100-300+ people and dividing their workload into the hands of 2-4 people. The delay would be laughably long

We returned from Europe via Philly. It was a smaller American plane to Memphis from Philly. They asked us to tag and put our carryons on a cart as we boarded the plane (no jet way, it was a ramp outside to the plane). I did as asked assuming the overhead space wouldn’t be big enough to fit a carryon. But it was .. I doubt everyone’s would have fit but maybe.
Configuration of seats was 2/2 is all I can offer .. idk what type plane.

We did it .. used compression bags which helped. Didn’t even rewear items as Rome was flipping hot and I was not washing in the sink or shower. 9 nights .. packed a couple of extra outfits “in case” and it all got worn.
Did we buy a mid size bag to return for things we night? Yep but it got checked.

Thats a regional jet, Emraer 175 or similar... A lot of times, their overheads can't fit standard size carryons.
I AVOID flying them at all costs for that reason alone. Similar to comment earlier around having to go to baggage claim. Nothing worse than getting off and standing in the jet bridge waiting for them to pull the bags off.

What kind of plane? On the smaller regional plans like Embraer E175, even a legit carryon suitcase only fits sideways

I wish that the flight attendants would stop people from putting both their carry on and backpack in the overhead bin. This happens all of the time. The backpacks take up room for people later boarding with carry ons.
