Just boarded a flight and no less than 8 bags are so long/big that they had to be turned sideways (long ways) to in the overhead bins. If your carry on bag is too long to fit in the overhead bin with either the wheels or the handle facing the isle, you should be forced to check it.

frick, people are assholes.

I’ve never once brought a carry-on in all my years of flying

Backpack (personal item) and checked bag only

I can’t imagine lugging around a second suitcase like some of these jackasses

I'm with OP on the scorn for oversized carry-ons, but don't assume a carryon is a second suitcase.

I just flew for a week out of town with nothing but a carryon and backpack (personal item). Will soon do the same for a three week trip. No checked suitcase.

Sounds miserable.

Traveling regularly for work and I couldn't imagine having to wait at baggage claim every time I land.

Carry on and back pack. Off the plane and directly to rental or uber FTW

I don't have a problem with this and I'll take it one step further.

I'd like to see some sort of glaringly obviously sticker or tag that proves its the right size. We shouldn't be checking bags during boarding, it should be done well ahead of time. Have a kiosk where your bag is guaranteed to be the right size. Don't hold up fricking boarding because your bag is too big. It should be certified ahead of time.

If airlines didn't charge $45 each way for a bag, more people would check a bag. I'm now on team 'I'm bringing my bag with me to the plane and will cause a delay in boarding if they need to gate check it because they're turning into greedy airlines and I don't feel like waiting 30-45 minutes at baggage claim.'

As soon as airlines started charging for bags the boarding and overhead bin experience turned into a shitshow

If only there was a check point somewhere in the airport that every passenger had to go through that already screens all carry on bags that could EASILY constitute a size regulation and could allow for ready access to ticketing agents and baggage handlers.

Plus, the baggage handlers really destroy your checked bags.

I bought a nice carry-on and have kept it for several years at this point and it's still in great shape.

Eh, not really their job and its slow enough already.

I think it should be done either at the Check in Counter, or have a kiosk at the airport or at least 15 mins prior to boarding at the gate. They measure, give you a sticker or tag, and you either pay to gate check or can carry on.

I also think there should be a weight limit of say 25 lbs.

The 2 main issues with carry ons aren't that everyone has them, the 2 issues are that they are too big and that half the people can't put them into the overhead by themselves in a reasonable manner due to their weight/ size.

on a the start of a two week trip right now. Same bag as I always use but more shite so it’s heavy. I checked that bitch and was happy to do it.

Underrated benefit of checking your bag is you can wait and be the last person to board. I don’t want to be crammed in there with genpop any longer than absolutely necessary

Carry ons add stress, aggravation and make travel day objectively more difficult

Yeah but they are a 100% effective way to ensure your bag arrives at the final destination

I guess but I travel a fair amount and have checked a lot of bags and never had one lost. It’s pretty damn low on my list of things to be concerned about

Plus with the airline apps now you can track your bag, or put an AirTag on it.

Because you've never had one lost

It has happened multiple times for me and jesus is it a pain to deal with. If I can avoid it, I will not check a bag.

I always laugh when they call a bag for the weight limit, then you see someone that is easily 150lbs heavier than you on the flight. Yea, I'm sure the extra 5lbs my bag was over really is causing some issues.

they literally go out of their way to encourage people to bring carryons since it is so much more expensive for them to deal with checked bags

Never will happen - any many will disagree...but if I could make one change that would fix most of the carry on related issues, it would be to eliminate cabin baggage with wheels.

Rolling suitcases are in general bigger and heavier. They take up more space on the plane and allow people to pack much more to carry on. It also allows the situation in which someone carries on a suitcase they cannot physically put into the overhead bins.

If people had to physically carry their bags through the airport, most of these issues would be eliminated quickly.

Just flew in early August from BTR-DFW-DRO round trip. All four flights every carry-on with wheels was gate checked. This was American.

90% of bin space is roller bags, so nearly all overhead was left open?

I don't see any airline doing it for pure logistics and workload on their crews. Now when they get to certain boarding groups if its filling up, yes, but no way they are telling a 1st class, premier status, passenger they can't bring their roller bag on with them.

This is where macro pricing theories clash. Fewer checked bags mean less need for labor, no need for expensive baggage infrastructure, and lower full costs

But it slows down the turn around as it slows down boarding and deplaning which is something FAs and gate attendants get judged (ie their bonuses) on so they basically incentivize their gate agents to gate check carryons even when they have the space

Its not about just the airport. You must not travel much to big cities, as you don't just park outside your front door and walk into where you are sleeping. I don't want a bag I'm carrying through the subway, down the street, etc.

You're pretty off on your thoughts on my travel. Regardless, the solution is simple. If you want a wheeled bag, check it. My proposal just eliminated cabin baggage with wheels.

And fundamentally, I disagree that traveling through subways, trains, walking down streets, etc. is easier with a rolling bag. I've done it plenty times both ways and having checked luggage pretty much guarantees that we're taking transportation directly to the hotel from the airport, whereas I am more likely to use a combination of public transportation and walking when I don't have a rolling suitcase.
