I have 5, maybe 6 (depending on travel) vacation days I need to burn before November. Other than the UK, the spouse and I are looking to go somewhere in Europe.

1. What country / countries should we go? France? Spain? Italy? Portugal? Germany? Norway? Denmark? Switzerland? Greece? Austria? Netherlands?

2. Given the tight time constraints, is it even worth it trying to go to more than one country? I don’t want to rush or force it and nit enjoy something due to constantly being on the go.

3. Where would you go? What cities? What would you see / do? I’m looking for the best “bang for buck.” Unique, great cities, churches, museums, countryside, great food and scenery, etc

Personally, I say no but thats more of a personal preference. Packing, traveling, checking in, checking out, unpacking, etc. it all just takes time an although there are ways to reduce the time spent it still takes time.

With 5 full days in anyone of those countries I'd think you can plan 3 full days with a tight itinerary and then two more relaxed days of just exploring with built in time for tings like bad weather, travel delays, sickness, other rare issues that may arise.

I would look into Iceland. The travel time isn’t bad at all. It was only like a 4.5 to 5 hour flight from NYC

With 6 days, you may as well count 2 as travel days. This gives you 4 vacation days with the 5th being an early am landing. Where ever you choose, I would limit it to one or two areas in one country. We did Portugal in 6 days. Split between Lisbon and Porto with a day trip to Sintra. It was perfect amount of time for each city.

With that little time, I'd go to one city that's not going to require a ton of outside travel. Copenhagen would be good.

^^^ This.

Not enough time to do more than one country first of all, so just pick one and enjoy.

With only that much time to explore Europe, you’ll want to choose a destination that offers interesting experiences without requiring too much travel time between sights.

I guess I'd first ask have you been? Is there some place you really have wanted to go?

Good article on subject

Based on where I've been though:

1. The obvious one would be to fly into Florence and do day trips in Tuscany.

2. Barcelona. Great city to visit. Day trip to Girona.

Good Day Trips.

3. Norway. Amazing fjords, waterfalls, mountains and some of the most thrilling hiking trails in Europe. We flew into Oslo then on to Bergen. Easy trip. Gorgeous country.

Things to do in Norway.

I would just stick to one major city and maybe base my decision on airfare. Five days isn't really long enough to explore a whole country when dealing with stuff like jetlag, getting to and from airport, etc.

Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, Rome, Barcelona, etc.

You can use one of your days to do a day trip by train - eg, Salzburg is an easy train ride from Munich. Just do a Google search for "best day trips from xxx"

Take timing into consideration. France will be a sh*tshow during the Olympics. August is when most Europeans vacation so crowds are bad. Bavaria is swamped during Octoberfest which actually begins in September. Weather turns earlier up north and in mountain areas.

No.

Pick a major city that you haven't been to, like Paris, and spend the 5 days there, with one (or two) minor day trips.

I would spend the whole time in Paris with maybe a day trip or two.

Yeah that is a very easy trip, and was basically my first Europe trip (5 full days).

Side trip to Versailles and/or Champagne or something.

PLENTY to do and see in Paris, so many neighborhoods, museums, cafes, sites to see.

Florence could be similar with trips into Tuscan country side or to Sienna.

London, etc.

I wouldn't do Rome, personally, by itself.

Use Labor Day weekend and you can easily turn that 5-6 days into a lot more. You'll pay more though.

My choices would be Paris or Rome. There is plenty to do and see in either city to spend all of your time there or you could take day trips by train from either. My wife and I have been to both cities and took day trips from both. From Paris we did a day trip and tour of Normandy. From Rome we did a day trip to Ovieto once and Pompei/Capri on another.

If you truly don’t have a preference, let the airlines decide. What’s the cheapest, direct flight? That’s my answer

Here's a thought. Try using Google Explore and see what kind of deals pop up for your date range.

You can browse destinations on a map and use filters to narrow down your options based on various travel interests.

Paris London or Rome
Whatever is the cheapest and most direct route. Those cities will keep you busy for 4-5 days without need to venture out.
