I've been a Chromebook user for quite awhile, but I need to fire up a windows laptop to run a program.

I'm looking for something I can download that can scan .exe file before installing programs. A plus would be one that also blocks malware.

TIA

This along with the free version of Avast.

Most of the other AV programs are memory hogs.

They sell the frick out of your data. That's why it is "free"

OP... I suggest ESET or Bitdefender.

ESET all the way. Not invasive at all and protects well.

I use Windows Defender, I never have any issues. Not a memory hog, and I don't get malware or virus'.

Just wear a mask. Plus the corona still hasn’t made it too far into the US.

Malwarebytes has a free version that does on demand scans and a paid version that runs full time in the background. That plus Windows Defender should meet your needs.

If you’re gonna buy something, ESET. If you want to go free, Windows Defender is more than adequate. I would also recommend Malwarebytes free version. It’ll let you run their full version for a brief period then you can manually check for malware as a backup to whatever you’re running ( I find they scan for the most comprehensive list of malware, generally).

I have an ESET subscription.

bitdefender free is a great choice. It is simple and always has the best protection and detection scores.

You just install it and forget it. No settings or anything to deal with.

Windows Defender and common sense are the best options.

No love for AVG anymore? I've been using it for years and it's saved me a number of times. Recently they've gotten a bit pushier than they used to be about upgrading to the paid version but not enough to make me switch.

I use Kaspersky. Light on resources, fast on detection and prevention. And I don't care if it is Russian owned.

It works.

I would also recommend Malwarebytes. Years ago I had pc Get wrecked by a virus. It was the only thing I found that would remove it. Bought the premium license and never looked back. I never have spyware, malware or virus problems of any kind. Its fantastic.

These days, most people have enough resources to cover AV. Back in the day, Kaspersky would kill my computer.

I've used them for a long time. I too don't worry about Russians hacking me.

I do get pissed that the renewal option is vastly more expensive than buying the program off of Amazon. I just renewed in January and the "deal" was $79. It was $89 on their website and it was $40 for a code on Amazon. That shite pisses me off.

I'm a long term customer. Don't make me go through the hoops of getting a code cheaper on Amazon. Give me the GD cheap price with the renewal option.
