Walmart has the MacBook Air M1 13.3 screen, 8 GB Ram, 256 GB storage for $699. It’s for a college freshman. Good deal or not. Or should I pay more for the M2?

You can use educational pricing and get the M2 for 899. Get the 3 year AppleCare as well. Total will be about 1100.

Macs last much longer in general, but I recall reading that the M2 was a significant improvement. Probably worth the $200

Nothing beats the amount of porn I watched as a Freshman back at LSU using my MacBook Air in 2011. Using LSU wifi felt like I was getting away with murder.

It is a 3 year old laptop.

Depending on the use case 8GB ram may not be a good idea. Even phones have that much ram these days.

With Apple you are going to pay 3-4x the normal price for additional ram or drive space.

Best buy and costco has/had them cheaper this week.

What are they doing with it? Taking notes, word? It is more than adequate.

Get the 15" screen. But other than that I use a 15" Macbook Air all day everyday for work and love it.

You will not get a better laptop for 699. You can get a much better laptop (40% faster on benchmark tests) for 999. Doubt you can max out a M2 on undergrad course work.

solid deal, we bought one for my child before freshman year of college, still working and about to graduate now with a laptop that still works.

The Apple Care protection is $159. I don’t see paying that for a $699 laptop.

The perfect OT response. Never fails.

"I'm going to a steakhouse, what kind of steak should I order"

"Go to a seafood restaurant instead."

or

"Don't waste money on a restaurant, cook your own steak"

The youngster just bought a new Air on Saturday. Her original we purchased for college back in 2014 finally went caput.

She bought a new air 13" and it has the M2 and 256, etc. they just had a price drop and reset the price points. She bought for $999 but was able to get additional discount since she works in a school. There were 4 other models in 13" with various configurations, 8 or 10 GPU core, 256 or 512 GB and M2 or new M3 chip.

The bump up in screen size to 15", I think was another $300.

The only issue I saw was there are no ports to plug anything into it, no flash drives, no external drives, nada.

Mac’s are way better unless you like waiting a half hour for your machine to boot up. They also last way longer and don’t have all of that useless and unnecessary clutter windows machines have built into them.

Never buy a laptop/desktop that is more than a year old. MacBooks are awesome and last a very long time.

Either will be fine for a college student but if she plans to keep longer than a few years I'd consider the M2. It has a more modern design in addition to the spec bump.

I have a M2 I bought in 2022 when it came out. Runs great with no issues. I did bump up the ram to 16 GB but I also plan to use this thing for another 6+ years.

How do you get the educational pricing for a student? She’s a senior in high school graduating in May.
