What is your bar for describing this World Cup as "successful" for USMNT?

In your opinion, are there Americans playing with House Money with their Paraguay and Australia performances (winning Group D in two games)?

Or are you on the other extreme where this is a once in a generation window to have home field advantage and we need to defeat at least one Blue Blood?

Mine is admittedly a kind of dumb metric (and a moving goalpost at that). I just want us to survive one round longer than Canada. They are insufferable and we can't give them an inch.

Does meeting expectations count as success?

If so, then a success would be making it to the Round of 16 because that's been our MO the last 16 years.

But to me, stagnation is not success and it shouldn't be celebrated as such. Factor in that we're on home soil and have a decent draw over these next two matches, I think we shouldn't be happy with anything less than a quarterfinal run.

That is very fair. It feels like you can't blame starting talent or Coaching for a result less than Quarters.

With the talent this team has, and Poch behind the wheel, I think semis would be a success.

Beat Bosnia and beat Belgium/Senegal. Anything after that is gravy

Giving Spain a game. Going toe to toe with one of the best teams in the world would meet the hype that has been generated so far.

If they beat Spain, they are good enough to realistically win the entire thing.

I think we need a bigger term than "success" for beating (likely) Spain to reach our farthest point ever in the modern era of the World Cup.

That would be like beating Spain in 2009 Confederations Cup to reach the finals... only 100x more awesome.

This is the correct answer. If they continue to play attacking soccer the way they have been, I like their chances as long as Ream and Richards hold up. I don’t trust either Freese or Turner to bail the defense out.

All this is contingent on injuries, because I don’t trust the subs, or any red card/yellow accumulation.

Beating Bosnia-a must
Beaten Belgium/Senegal-tough, won’t hate it if we lose but hoping we win
QF vs Spain-give them a good match
Semi vs France-mission impossible

So, imo, success is good match vs Spain in QF.

Nothing short of losing to Spain in PKs. Gotta nut up, get over the hump, and get the overall mentals moving forward for 2030.

They need to at least go past the round of 16 for this to be a success and losing in the round of 16 would probably be a disappointment.

This usa team is actually really good and should be one of the best 8 teams with a good chance to win a final 8 game imo.

They have like 4 guys that can win with the ball. I don't ever remember a us team like this.

Well beating two countries at once in the first round of the knockout stage would be quite impressive

I think we can all agree now that the 2026 World Cup cannot be classified as "a disappointment" for USMNT going forward.

Oddsmakers currently have the Belgium Match as a PICK'EM (coin flip).

Got to win the theoretical "Coin Flip" at home and then you are really playing with house money.

Win next match and it’s a wild success

Compete or lose a tight one and it’s a success

Get blown out and meh, all that momentum is gone

Quarterfinal

Home World Cup we were favored to win group and favored tonight. Upset Belgium and it was a success

If they can get past Belgium without Balogan then they should have a surge of momentum with him back for the next round.
