re: What is your bar for describing this World Cup as "successful" for USMNT?

then they should have a surge of momentum with him back for the next round.
Spain will be an extremely tall task

One more W and the wheels will be falling off from positive enthusiasm. That’s why we need to win one more.

I think we can all agree now that the 2026 World Cup cannot be classified as "a disappointment" for USMNT going forward.
I am still going to be disappointed if our best team ever still doesn’t make it past the round of 16 but the Balogun screw job definitely changes the feeling some.

Yeah I mean if we outplay Belgium or even play them to an overall standstill and Pepi just sucks a big one it’s hard to blame the team or general set up. We just got hosed.

It’s already a success by traditional standards. The knockout win tonight to the top 16 validates our ranking. That said, one more win would inject rocket fuel into our collective veins.

Googles says the Spain team's average height is 5'11.5 inches. I mean that's ok, but USA's average team height is 6'0.2.
THEY AIN'T THAT TALL!

US shouldn't worry about how far they make it. If they look like they belong in each match then its successful. Playing Spain or Portugal and losing 3-0 or 3-1 would be a failure. Getting bounced in PKs against Belgium or Spain would be a success

Before the WC, I felt that with the expanded field and extra knockout round that just making the Quarters would be a success for this team. Whether we got blown out or not.
However, after seeing how this team is capable of playing, and how the bracket has panned out, making the Semis is now my goal.

At this point, even without Flo, I feel good about beating Belgium. If we can get to Spain, they have struggled to score against everyone but Saudi Arabia. We won't be favored, but it'll be close. If we can go up a goal and it'll be very interesting.

They are about to get tested. See if they are good enough to come up and meet the play of a team like Belgium. Then even more for a possible Spain/Portugal meet. Lasts night game was the first I could sit and fully watch them without distractions. Comparing this current Spain/Austria game, the play isn't the same.
Like watching NFL vs just good college.
US fans need to be realistic about their expectations. But the celebration clips after last night, shows way to many have rose colored glasses and are going to drop hard. Especially after the pretty easy path to this point.

Loss in Rd of 16=Disappointment in my book since you have to go back to 2002 since the last time we advanced past that stage
Host nations have historically over performed at the WC (minus Qatar) therefore QF at a minimum for me to say success and semis would be a pleasantly surprised success

Round of 16 is par, we do it in most WCs.
QFs is success. We rarely do it.
SFs is dreamland. It means we beat a power like Spain, Portugal or Croatia. Very unlikely to get that far.
Finals are unrealistic. We will lose to France or Morocco if we get to the semis.

Achieving the knockout round is par.
Winning a knockout match is birdie. We've only done that twice in modern World Cup: 2002 and last night.
We're below par right now.

Think there’s too much focus on how deep we make it as far as what constitutes success. That’s certainly a big part of it, but the level of performance and style of play we’ve exhibited have already made it a success to some degree. We’ve dominated the three games we played our A team to a level we never have before. 8-1 against stubborn opposition and total game state dominance.
Yes not the best competition possible, but we also didn’t have any utter cakewalks. All three wins against decent wc opposition. Peru beat Turkey and Germany. Bosnia beat Italy to qualify and was only down 1-0 to Switzerland through 80 min until a red card. And we dominated all of them.

Sure we won a knockout game, but in the old format Bosnia wouldn't have even qualified.
