They stopped playing after the last goal. You're telling me that he scored that goal on the very last second of the game?
If it expires in the middle of an attack they let it finish, and that’s even if they haven’t decided to add more on for things that happened in stoppage time.

So why didn't the game stop at 97:00? There was 7 minutes of extra time. 90:00 + 7:00 = 97:00, no? They just play till someone feels like calling it a day?

Time added on (stoppage time) is a minimum number of minutes to be added. It’s not a firm number.

Don’t feel bad that it makes no sense; as a referee, I have to remind coaches of the same thing - that time added on is a minimum number. They still don’t get it.

As a reminder, if you have any Italian friends, please send them a note that the USA has scored 4 more 2026 World Cup goals than they will.

I'm not trying to be combative, just seems ripe for corruption in a sport led by an organization that isn't exactly known for being squeaky clean and full of integrity.

OK, so the clock really is just a suggestion, not an actual rule. They can subjectively decide to let them play longer just based on how one team is flowing at the moment.

Yes. I’ve seen +7 go 12 minutes in certain games.

Rasslin rules are definitely more strict and the refs rarely let anything slide.

Off the top of my head, this is the first time the USA has won a World Cup game by multiple goals since Dos a Cero in 2002

And haven’t won our opener since ‘02…… just saying

So with this new format, is having a +3 goal differential through the first game basically guarantees us advancing right?

Won the opener in Brasil in ‘14 2-1 against Ghana. “It’s John Brooks, it’s John Brooks!”

There has been rumor of corruption in FIFA and international soccer, I've heard.

+3 goal difference is massive. Really an ideal start (even if short of absolutely perfect)

Yes, unless we have an epic meltdown.

The Guardian football podcast was discussing this with a different group and said 3 points and a 0 G/D basically guarantees you advancement
