Realistically how many 19 year olds are ever national team starting players (or even scorers for the matter)?

I get we are all pissed at the natties here, but damn.

He still has a little bit of time to develop. Young. Can develop. POTENTIAL.

Jozy, which is why it’s not a fair comparison

Excess pass, bad placement on the header

You’re putting emphasis where it was not originally intended.

This is the least hype that our national team has ever had heading into a World Cup. The state of the national team is truly embarrassing right now.

Yep. For the life of me I don’t understand how we can finally have guys playing for teams and in leagues that we dreamed of but the team plays so much worse.

Frankly I’m glad we auto qualify because this group may not have under the old numbers. Also hurts that there aren’t many competitive matches to play until then.

Because, while our top end talent may be better than it was in 2002-10, the depth isn't better, but it's covered up because they are playing in Europe, so it's assumed they are better.

In reality, it's easier for Americans to play in Europe now than it was then because there is less of a stigma.

I’ve long argued that Eddie Pope and Landon Donovan were top 10-15 players in their position in the world at their peaks but were treated like scrubs because of their nationality.

Nowadays both would have been starters at champions league teams if they were born in 1999.

By complete chance, I’ll be in Nashville for the NT game. I didn’t even realize it at the time, it’s a complete coincidence.

What does the board say? Should I go?

This is the most apathetic I’ve been about the USMNT in over twenty years. It’s just not what it once was. Melancholy personified.

Depends upon how much pleasure you get from pain? Do you hate yourself? Are you only happy when it rains? Do you want to fall to your knees and ask God “Why, oh why?” If so then get yourself some good seats - shouldn’t be hard.

Diego Luna looks like some of my scaffold builders and I'm here for it.

He’s my favorite player right now and this is a bigger part of it than I would like to admit

Overall I thought the game wasn’t terrible. Johnny blunder aside I thought it was pretty even.

Arfsten impressed me with his press resistance and willingness to go at defenders. I see why Toulouse is interested.

McGlynn has a special left foot and deep shooting ability no one else in the pool has. I don’t think he works as a winger though. I still want to see Tolkin in this side but I’m not sure Poch knows he exists.

Freeman is an interesting prospect for sure.

One big difference between GGG and Poch (besides Poch seeming to love MLS players) is we sacrifice some defensive stability for more attacking chances. I’m not opposed to that but we were consistently burned on the counter when we give it away with one or both backs very high up. More clinical teams will eat us alive.

Kinda nuts how our attacking build up has somehow gotten even slower going from Gregg to Poch

I honestly think some of this is on the players. It was so frustrating to me to watch our guys with a break, someone making a good run, only to reflexively pass it backwards.

Absolutely. The scuffed soccer podcast is having a tailgate next to the nearby dog park. I went there for the Ghana game. It was a fun experience.

Good thing all the Nations League players aren’t too tired to play this final.

Eddie Pope

If we had prime Eddie Pope now, he would be our best CB in the pool and it wouldn't be remotely close.

To be clear, I'm saying that career MLS player Eddie Pope is a better CB than Chris Richards who has exclusively played in the Bundesliga and Premier League.

Watched the game yesterday and I thought we were the better team for a large portion of the game. Perception of the game is way different if Tillman or Arfsten finish one of those headers. We were a Johnny goof away from drawing a decent near full strength Turkish side with a side consisting of 8 MLS players.

Luca had a good game progressing the ball up the field

Like Cwill said McGlynn had strike the hell out of the ball just not sure how many 1v1s he's gonna ever win out there

Big Pat has the first touch of a concrete wall

Luna has the try shite gene and I'm here for it

Richards had a fantastic game

I think part of this is the evolving out of possession portion of games in the T5 leagues, a little easier to hide a weaker player if the whole of the defense is solid. Seems like there was a lot more “just go play” 10+ years ago (very much an oversimplification). Guys are being coached into robots now, they don’t do a lot of individual problem solving

I guess what I’m saying is, the individual talent of Pope is undoubtably better than Richards, but Richards can succeed in T5 leagues because of the way the game is played now.

But what I'm saying is, is that Pope would succeed as well if he played now because his talent would've been picked up by an T5 league and would've adapted to the way the game is played now.

We’re on the same page, I actually think he’d look even better in today’s game
