Hasn’t he been pretty solid at FC Dallas this season so far? I think I rather him on the wing and Gio in the middle with no Weah than any other option.

In that case start Jesus. Coming off a hat trick and he and Nips are showing some real chemistry at FC Dallas.

That lineup also has 5 new starters, with 4 fully fresh. I think we’ll need that energy after the effort they put in tonight
Gregg won’t do it, but I wouldn’t hate to see Horvath. Steffen looked slow in reacting to man city and somewhat tonight. He also did not look good with his feet

I know xG can be a little misleading sometimes, but holding Mexico to 0.40 at the Azteca is really fricking good.

If there is one thing we've been really good at under Gregg, it has been defense.

Outside of Chooky, no one looked dangerous. Sticking them with Funes-Mori really set back their striker development. I was really surprised they did not bring in Lainez and Antuna to run at our tired/carded backs. Either Tata forgot or he’s saving them for the other two matches.

Who was the captain after Pulisic was subbed out? I missed the comment from the announcer.

Also isn't Chicharito “banned” from the National team for the same indiscretion as McKennie? But it’s been more than 2 years.

I agree that Lozano was the only guy who looked dangerous last night, and there has to be pressure on bringing him back.

Was the change in formation / strategy the last 10 minutes a good idea? We pretty much had 0 possession that whole time and allowed Mexico to pepper the goal constantly. It seems like we played better defense before that, while maintaining possession.

I think Mexico would have won 1-0 if we hadn’t made that tactical change. We weren’t really possessing the ball either way, so subbing fresh defenders for tired players was the right call IMO.

And not to quibble, but I don’t think they “peppered the goal constantly” by any means. The best chance they had, that we cleared off the line, was kind of flukey.

Well their xG was 0.4 for the whole game so pepper they did not. They had two shots on goal all game. Also even the announcers gave credit for the tactical adjustment. If we didn’t have 3 at the back then they score a tap in on one of their crosses into the six.

Was the Aaron Long clearance their best shot all game?

Chooky had a few good chances that he fired wide, but they were well struck. They had a golden chance in the first half undone by a strong first touch that let Steffen get to the ball first. Overall, they weren't dangerous, but we gave them a few opportunities with bad turnovers playing out of the back (Zimmerman, Steffen, and Musah each had one).

Does Pulisic always play wide for Chelsea?

I don’t guess there’s any chance we’d see an attacking 4 of like Arriola, LDLT, Pulisic, Reyna.

Pulisic was off all night. He probably should have been subbed instead of Weah. The right back idea is intriguing, but I think we'll see:
Steffen
Moore-MRob-Zimmerman-Jedi
Adams
Musah/LDLT-Acosta (apparently he played well--I didn't see it)
Gio-9-Pulisic
The bench is THIN if you have any injuries. No RB, unless Cannon gets over Covid, No MF except for Busio & Roldan, No winger except for Nipples. We are 1-deep at most positions, and quickly drop to MLS-caliber talent after that. Luckily, all they have is MLS-caliber talent. Their draw yesterday takes some of the pressure off, and a W will all but clinch qualification. I expect we'll get it. But I’d feel much better with Weah, McKennie, & Dest in the lineup!

If we didn't have 3 in the back, maybe they don't even get an opportunity for that cross at all since we would maintain possession (that's the hope at least).

As soon as we switched to that formation, they have a dangerous play where we are lucky the pass wasn't on target. And yes, the Mexico player at the 6 was in a scoring position. I don't see how this was a "fluke" as some have said. It was poor defensive play, and that's with having a 5 vs 2 advantage on that attack.

Immediately after that, they get a wide open shot from the 18 that lucky for us, wasn't on target.

87:30 - Another big opportunity for Mexico with a ball chested down at the 6 from a backwards header pass. Instead of shooting, a sloppy pass to someone in scoring position was made. We are lucky he didn't shoot and put it on goal.

89:45 - The dive in the box. Still was potentially a dangerous opportunity for Mexico but looked well defended.

92:30 - Another opportunity with a shot from the 18 but was poorly hit.

So yeah, maybe not "peppered"...I don't know. But that's 4 or 5 opportunities they had. Lucky for us, their finishing was as bad as ours. Mexico had possession for probably at least 80% of that last 10 (+5) minutes. If we maintain our formation, and keep possession more, do we still give up 4 or 5 or more opportunities in the same time? I guess you'd have to look at the previous 80 minutes and see how we did.

Didn’t he play the pass to Reyna that should have been a Pefok goal?

Other than that, I didn’t see much.

Kind of shocked Mexico only had an xG of .4. Lozano had some nice shots. Conversely, shocked ours was only 1.26, thought it would be over 2.

I truly appreciate Yedlin, and the shift he put in tonight, but with Dest and a healthy McKinnie, we could have had the most complete performance at that shithole in history.

This was my concern pre-match. Yedlin’s connection to Weah and Musah was almost non-existent and the reason that Mexico attacked the left side all night. They wore Yedlin’s arse out.
