Too far. Just cheer for neither.

women's gold medal game has to go to PKs

Canada was able to tie the match originally thanks to VAR helping get a PK awarded that wasn't originally awarded

The winning penalty in the shootout for Canada was so shite that it is almost unbelievable. Good god that sport sucks

I watched some "highlights" of the Women's Final. Most of the clips are just them booting the ball down field, passing the ball out of bounds, or just heading the ball to nobody. I can't tell if this is serious or not.

Reminds me of the Aussie league highlights

Mexico got third place in the olympics. Their gold medal winning team (2012) produced almost no major contributors to their full national team, fwiw

the shootout between Canada and Sweden is cringe worthy

6 rounds
7 of the 12 kicks saved or missed
the 5 that scored were all terrible

pks start at 4:30 in link

Christine Sinclair the captain has been waiting for this for 22 years-went down to Portland during the 84 World Cup and has been nothing but class and completely professional her entire career. She’s scored the most goals of any player male or female at around 190 and I say this last bit without irony or shame I cried like a baby watching her realize she’d finally won a championship. Goin soft in my old age.

I think they had some decent players on that squad, but looking back, I don’t think all of them featured heavily. Big names, though: Herrera, G dos Santos, Aquino, Fabian, Jimenez, etc.

But the Olympics are unlike any other youth tournament in that you can get a huge leg up if you can convince a few over-aged players worth half a shite to show up

Tuned into the final on my phone, watched Richarlison sky a penalty, then turned it off. Having the Olympics coverage split over TV and paid streaming services is annoying since they’re incentivized to put bigger things on the streaming services

Well it appears I was mistaken. Thanks for pointing that out. It helps that the Mexican league lets their players go and the majority of their young talent plays domestically

I think don’t think anyone from their last U17 winning team amounted to much, so that may have been what you were thinking about. Really a crapshoot as far as development goes at that age

The age cutoff for the Olympics is high enough that they’re usually bringing already established players

It's really dumb how they qualify so who knows. We'll have to put together a U21 team, half of which may not even be in the oly roster. It depends on how much emphasis we decide to put on it and the timeframe of other major tournaments. No one thought we'd have this many major tournaments in 2021 this time 2 years ago.
