Nobody seems to complain when their favorite NFL team ends their season with a loss and still goes to the playoffs.

what about the group stage essentially being a qualifying tourney do you not understand?
How is this different than two teams from the NFC East making the NFL playoffs, two from the AL East making it in MLB, or multiple teams from the same division in NBA getting into the playoffs?
You must also had March Madness since a team can lose their conference tourney and still get into the 64 team knockout tourney.

Are you trolling or you really don't get it? I think you're smarter than this. ANd considering the group and it's first time we ever did it back to to back WCs its a huge accomplishment. We didn't back in. We did enough to beat 2 other teams and finished 2nd in a group. ANd like other playoffs now teams are reseeded for the next round. This round coming up is the one and done. Its just combining best of 7 type playoffs and 1 and done playoffs. Get the best of both worlds

No this is just one of the last stages of a massive 2 year tournament that culminates in a mini tournament called the World Cup Finals. The actually play off begins now in the knockout stages. The rest of it is just qualifying stage after qualifying stage.

It's just a higher profile qualifying phase. Much like a college basketball team can lose its last games of the regular season, lose in its conference tourney, and still make March Madness and win the whole thing.
Or how Vandy could get fricking ten run ruled in their conference tournament in baseball and still win the whole thing. Or how three of our sports have playoffs where you can lose up to three times and still advance

Ok I may be laying it on a little thick.... I understand the celebrating to an extent. We knew the format and used it to make it to the next round.
But for real I wouldn't complain if they made it where the top team is the only one that advanced. That would give you. 3 games to come out of your group and not. One and done but that every 2nd place in every group moves one. That's diff than a wild card since I and others were comparing football

This is your first post on the soccer board and USA has played 3 games in WC play thus far. Doubt you would have cared to celebrate if the USMNT would have won today anyways. Troll away.

but with it being random draws every 4 years you are strictly advancing off of the draw. Group of Death happens every WC and its a dog fight for 2 to advance. It would be horrendously unfair to only have 1 move out of our group when you look at other groups that are pure junk. Letting top 2 move out is best way to assure quality teams that catch terrible draws still make it to the 1 and done stage of the playoff

Why doesn't football just take the 2 best teams from both conferences and have the SB in December?

I like the format of the World Cup. Now, whether we should be happy about the US's performance today is certainly up for debate.

I think what he's saying is that the next time the Saints make the playoffs as a wild card, he'd be rooting for the other team that won its division and legitimately made the playoffs.
