32 countries out of hundreds made it. You need that many teams because just qualifying doesn't tell the whole story. Players have to make a living. The 23 players you take aren't necessarily available during qualifying. Then the level of teams are not equal across the globe. It actually makes perfect sense, because our group was tough based on a random draw. So 2 teams get out. We made it out of the group for getting better results than 2 other teams. They then match the 2nd place with the first place, so if we beat Belgium, why shouldn't we have had the opportunity to do so. Our group was harder to get out of.

Beat explanation in the thread...

Thank you!! this is exactly what i asked for in the OP.

You have just helped me realize that I may not have as much "Murican" me as I thought I did.

You are really dumb and don't know shite about football if you actually think that we "backed in." In 2010, we backed in due to a shitty group. We were absolute garbage in South Africa.

But this cup...?

We've played some absolute quality football and our only defeat came on a fortunate bounce to an attacker who had perfect position to strike one into the back of the net. Back to basics really.

It's not backing in.. They played better than the other two teams..

We EARNED it.. it's the system we played and we played it to advance.. It's all about strategy and getting the results needed. We deserve it. We beat Ghana and we tied Portugal (whom we also had beat if not for so much extra time)

I would not call that backing in when we pretty much beat the other two teams STRAIGHT up..

Are you refering to today's game ... because what you are describing sounds like Portugal's first goal ... and we tied that game.

You know who else backed in to a knockout tournament? The 2011 VCU Rams. They lost their conference tournament and were one of the last 4 in and had to play in the play in game. I'm sure that when the selection committee announced that they had made the tournament they celebrated. Who knows? Maybe, we'll make our own final four run.

Olbermann just opened his show with your same OP, so you're as 'Merican as Olbermann.

One of the better explanations I have heard about the group play stage of the World Cup is think of it like a golf tourney. You do not have to shoot the lowest score on Championship Sunday to win The Masters. You have to play well enough to make the cut (advance to knockout stage), but you dont have to have to the lowest score every day of the tournament to make the cut or even win it.

Ghana didn't give us shite. The keeper just fricked up. It happens.

Nah. He threw the game.

el oh el.

Yes, the team, that just had 3 mil flown in and escorted to the game, That had a great chance to advance, that only needed a goal at that point, that tied with Germany so it would be harder for the us to advance, that had scored a goal within minutes after Portugal scored, and that has knocked us out of the previous 2 world cups, wanted us to advance so they fixed the game.

They should make me the commish of FIFA and I'd have the round robin with the 4 teams but only the winners coming out of a group.

I don't like the "backing in" to the group of 16. Should be a group of 8.

Someone tell me why my train of thought is off base?

Let's see ... sometimes 'Merican NFL teams "back into" the playoffs by losing their last regular season game, but otherwise qualifying because the result in another game was in their favor.

Yes or no?

Do you take Stupid Pills or does it come naturally to you?
