Had a feeling all the previous 24 hours definitely had some mental toll on their players given how different they looked compared to the rest of the games.

quote:

“My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy,” Balogun told CBS Mornings, when asked about FIFA’s decision. “And I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves. Because it is something that is so unique. The closer we got to the game, I tried to just focus as best as I could, but it was difficult. A lot of outside noise and that’s hard to avoid.”

That initial terrible red card fricked us and then Trump getting involved was just the death knell.

So, if I went back in a Time Machine and convinced the President to stand down...

Would Matt Freese had stayed in the Penalty Box for Goal #3?

We probably still lose but they probably don't make the amount of mental mistakes they did that day. Sort of like Belgium's loss to Spain or Paraguay's loss to France

If they didn’t stay away from social media (like they should have) they would have seen the incredible amount of hate the US team received. Seemed like the rest of the world was pulling against them

I sincerely hope that shitty arse ref & VAR crew take a ball to the mouth at least once a game for the rest of their reffing careers

Could they not simply stay off their phones and ignore the outside noise?

Doesnt the "Us vs The World" narrative usually motivate American sports teams in our domestic leagues?

Sure sure. Not that they simply sucked and played a joke of a schedule up to that point.

Trump's an idiot but athletes at this level should not be this affected by what others might think.

In my mind it would be, the officials decided it, so I'm playing, go talk to them if you don't like it.

You have to embrace being the bad guy. Let others melt over that shite while you win.

This.

Who cares if the rest of the world was "outraged" about the overturned red card? The decision gave you your best player back against a good opponent in front of a huge crowd cheering you on in your homeland. It will be a long time before the US team has that kind of homefield advantage again.

Yet, the team came out nervous, timid, and lacking confidence from LITERALLY the first minute. Case in point, there was a Belgium shot blocked by a US defender. As the ball deflected towards the sideline it was easily playable by Dest for at least 15 yards. Yet, instead of playing the ball he shielded off the defender to allow the ball to slowly roll out of bounds for a Belgium throw into the box. That's exactly what happened. The Belgium player threw the ball into the box that immediately led to a shot that was blocked, followed by rebound shot that the US GK barely got a finger on to deflect.

That was the tone of the whole game. Instead of using the energy of the home crowd to be the aggressor and put Belgium into a spot where they felt like they were playing 11 on 70k, the US played like a team just hoping to not make a mistake and let Belgium push them around.

If (a) getting your best player back and (b) having to listen to the whinny Europeans complain about the US (which they do everyday, for every reasons) causes you to crumble mentally then you were a mentally weak team to begin with.

Right like there weren't already nerves to try and go farther than any US team in decades and playing against an actual good team and not Bosnia.

I know you're ignoring the context, but the host was asking leading questions to try and get to the answer they wanted, which is that Trump is responsible for the US losing, which is complete nonsense.

Let me guess, Trump is the reason France just lost.

Whatever makes people feel better about losing. We weren't winning that game. This excuse proves the team was no where near elite.

At this point it's no longer a narrative.

It's just the truth.
