In addition to not having any fixed rules really (like time on a match or offsides at times), looks like this is not a fixed rule either.

Ben Jacobs just reported on talk Sport that it falls under the rules of Article 27:

“Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code permits judicial bodies to suspend disciplinary measures, allowing players to serve a probationary period instead of an immediate suspension”

It is kind of dumb but again it’s not without precedent, they’ve done this before in other WCs.

Really? How did I miss that? Never saw anyone mention that

Was just now added I guess

I feel bad for LSU fans that they couldn't have that linebacker for the first half of a that game against Bama a few years back.

What the USNT can't risk right now is a double suspension in 2027

I’ll take 2027 suspension over right now!

I just posted the same thing in the other thread. I've heard/read so much about the red and possible appeal chances but can't recall anything about this.

The one thing that actually was a potential solution.

I found this excellent article from the BBC, had no idea that they've been making these decisions for decades.

It was a terrible call and this should be a shock to no one- actually gives me some hope in this world that common sense can prevail

I’d assume we leaned hard on them for the improper use of VAR and they are trying to save face. It looks horrible though. They should’ve done it a lot closer to the actual game.

If I was Belgium I would refuse to play the match. Show up FIFA for its corruption on the biggest stage.

This isn’t corruption- this is the correct call

I’m sure if something similar happened to Doku you would be saying that.

Having anyone covering soccer here bring up this potential "probation" solution amid the 500 million times I heard "no FIFA red card appeals" would have been nice.

We wasted 4 days of going ballistic about Ronaldo getting a probation and not Balogun.

Basically a FIFA rule that’s the equivalent of the college football “you have to miss two games but the team gets to choose which ones” so you choose two cupcake games. FIFA famously used it a few tourneys back for Ronaldo when he was set to miss the first 2-3 games of the tourney due to a pre-tourney red card.

Not quite.

What FIFA did was suspend the suspension for a year subject to his behavior. If Balogun were to get sent off for the USA within the next year, his minimum suspension would be 2 additional games instead of the normal one. I would also expect FIFA to add on to that suspension as well.

What if he gets a red in the World Cup again this tournament? Does he have to serve a 2 game suspension? What about a double yellow?
