yes, about that percent of individuals and a bit less than half of family units on any given census period. Now, add the fact that slavery lasted about 200 years and that some families would have owned slaves on one generation and not in others.

Now, add the fact that slavery ended approximately 8 generations ago, meaning that you have 256 ancestors in that generation alone.

Now, add another ten generations or so back to the BEGINNING of North American slavery, and you have a bit more than 100,000 southern ancestors. Now, ask what the chances might be that NONE of those 100,000 was one of the (conservatively) 1/4 who owned slaves. Statistically, the chances are essentially zero.
