re: WSJ: Trump thought opening Hormuz Straight was imminent, Iran had other plans

There was never going to be a good situation with the strait of Hormuz. Iran has long been known to have the ability to create havoc with their fast boats and ballistic missiles.
In March they blatantly told US diplomats they would be building nuclear weapons unless they were stopped by force. They promptly got their butts whooped.
If you need 5 dollars for gas money, I’m sure someone here can organize a gofundme.

Pretty sure I remember you saying you were in the military, did you cry this hard when you served?
I'm former military, and the only issue I have is that it's taken nearly 50 years to do this.
The hardline, radical leadership has become entrenched over the two generations and they won't let go unless you pry it from their dead hands.
Don't trust anything they say until they are no longer speaking, i.e. dead.

quote:Yeah, and this is where the outrage over NATO gets strangely selective. We hear endlessly about allies “free-riding” on American power, but somehow that same standard disappears in the Gulf.
Huge problem is all those middle east countries let the USA do all the heavy lifting and don’t do much of jack shite to band together and stop Iran from fricking up everyone’s trade.
We spend enormous amounts of money guaranteeing the security of countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE, maintain forces and bases throughout the region, and repeatedly put American troops and assets at risk protecting their trade and energy infrastructure. In return we get to pay rent on a few bases and commercial relationships.
Yet Trump keeps treating these governments like indispensable partners while complaining that Europeans are taking advantage of us. If burden-sharing is really the principle, it ought to apply in the Middle East too.

He already did that several times. He was bluffing. The Iranians called his bluff, and he backed off. You want him to try bluffing again?
Don't be an idiot forever. Everything being done has a purpose. We are watching. Several leaders have been eliminated and blockade is slowly choking them.
This is war now. Cutting off imports and exports and forcing leaders to the table.
Iran is being its own enemy in a way. The threats and delays are making the use of the strait less and less of a necessity as others solutions are being worked by those entities.
We just need, in cooperation with others, constantly monitor the country and bomb any attempts at nukes and military equipment. Keep them impotent for the next 20 years

The same nuclear capability Trump destroyed last year?

Honestly, what do you want him to do? Destroy a city with 8 million people? Invade with the entire US military? Nuke em?
Both A and C are correct.

I couldn't disagree with you more in the Ukraine thread, but this post is SPOT ON. Excellent post patriot

I assume you are being intentionally ignorant because doing so makes you feel intelligent.

So you agree that Trump conceived and executed an ill-advised and strategically ineffective war against Iran.
But Putin was right to invade Ukraine, and his total victory is inevitable?
There are only a few differences between the two. Iran is a dangerous state sponsor of terrorism trying to get nuclear weapons to destroy its enemies. And Ukraine was just a corrupt Europeam backwater whose primary sin was having resources Putin wanted. And whose second sin was not wanting to become the next Belarus.
Meanwhile the main differences between Putin and Trump is that Trump doesn't have the political capital to continue prosecuting his failed war. He's a soon to be lame duck looking at mid term elections in 90 days.
Putin is an autocratic dictator who doesn't worry about election and murders his political enemies.
So he actually does have the political capital to continue prosecuting his failed war.
Is that about right?

You have the mind of a child. The world is going to adapt to whatever power the Iranians exert and that power is going to decline. Can you not comprehend the simplicity of this statement of fact?
That said, I do wish Trump would STFU with the stupid threats. Hit them whenever and wherever you want and don't say another word about it. No fanfare. No massive campaign. No conditions, warnings, or offers. Just strikes anytime, all the time, and until we decide not to.

There are no mines in the water and Iran isn’t doing anything to physically close the straight. They are threatening to put mines out and that’s making insurance companies back out of insuring tankers going through the straight.
Wouldn’t it be cheaper for the US government to just insure the tankers.
We are probably spending more on munitions in 1 day than the cost of 10 tankers.

Well..if by anything you mean like 60% of their economy? Because the IRGC controls most of the political economic structure of the country. Pretty much anything worth owning. So there's that.

Iran Elevates Longtime Military Commander to Top Security Post
The appointment of Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council suggests that Iran’s old guard is consolidating power.
This is a story in this morning's NYTimes
I mean, don't you understand that by removing the ayatollah who had no functional heir, the IRGC became much stronger?

The war in Ukraine and the war in Iran couldn’t be more different. One involves a former superpower starting an ill-conceived war of choice, miscalculating and finding itself in the precipice of a generational economic catastrophe. And the other is Russia’s war in Ukraine.
