Your wife’s breast will make free milk. And believe it or not, it’ the best thing for your newborn, it has your wife’s antibodies in it.

Really? In this entire 3 page thread that you took no time to read, nobody mentioned women could produce milk. Thanks for the incite.

Have a 13 day old son. My wife is going to breastfeed for as long as possible. It gets hard when our 2 year old is not at school. I’ve been able to keep him occupied, but I go back to work tomorrow and work shift work. We’ve been trying to start supplementing formula, but can’t find any. Similac sent free samples of the already made stuff that he just tried today. He took it well enough. Going to get dicey real fast.

If you can't produce enough breast milk to keep your kid happy you shouldn't be having kids.

A large portion of babies that are on formula are not on it because of medical necessity, but on it due to an inconvenience by the mother or lack of support from family members, job requirements, etc. I’ll admit, I didn’t see the part where OP mentioned that his wife has issues with the first three with latching. Hopefully with this one everything will work out for them, to the OP I’m sorry for my original ignorant comment. But I do see it all the time with some mothers not trying which increased demand and makes it harder for people like OP who need it.

Natural goat milk is the next best thing to breastfeeding. Call up your local farmers.

Does she pump? That helped my wife out a ton when she was breastfeeding and had to go back to work or had both kids at home

How much of the empty shelves are because of hoarders you think?

Have not looked into it, but why is there a shortage of baby formula?

Because the largest factory of the largest baby formula maker had a contamination issue that killed a couple babies. The plant got temporarily shut down by the feds due to unsanitary manufacturing. It had to correct the unsanitary practices that led to the contamination and death. They have just reached an agreement to reopen with more hygienic practices. It could be a couple weeks for product supply to get back up to normal. In the meantime, the feds are looking to temporarily allow imports from foreign manufacturers who are consistent with US safety and hygiene standards.

Bottom line, we failed the first time because I was a worried, lazy bitch. I should have been more patient and encouraged my wife to do the same. Baby isn’t going to starve.

I think this is the key. After our 3rd, the hospital all but told us just to use formula. We ignored them of course.

What we found, after 3, was that the mother will produce the right amount of Milk and this goes for the overwhelming majority of women. You just have to keep trying and it eventually works.

for real. I have a 6 month old in the family and they are driving to different towns/cities to look for the stuff.

So, what did civilization do for the 100,000 years before Gerber stocked the local supermarkets with formula?

I absolutely think there is something to the epidural hurting the initial attempts.

I've never heard this before, but it makes sense thinking about our experience with our two boys. My wife had an epidural both times, but neither of them worked at all; our boys were both able to latch out of the gate.
