No one addressed to me why he quit a multimillion dollar job at his firm (I can confirm that bc a colleague of mine is a partner at the same firm. Will be with him tomorrow) for a much lower salary, more scrutiny and more stress at this stage in his life.

Maybe you should ask that question to a reservist in any branch of service. Why would you want to volunteer to put your job and family on hold while taking a chance of being killed while serving your country.
Money doesn't play a part in the decision to serve your country for just anybody. It's a calling and apparently you don't see that.
