I think they went from booze to labor unions, then to government. Government became the socially acceptable face of organized crime, imo.

That's possible. But they could turn to other means like sex trafficking, or kidnapping which could just as easily take place on this side of the border.
a. sex trafficking existed prior to drugs and will never be a cash cow like drugs
b. we can kill their sex trafficking martket by legalizing prostitution (just like with drugs)
c. if Mexican cartels start kidnapping Americans in America then they will face the wrath of the US military. are you insane?

That’s more a product of their environment. They have no other way to settle difference. Their real competitive advantage is they have the network to move that much product illegally.

a. Actually it's already more profitable
b. And we're doing a fine job legalizing both
c. LINK LINK and LINK says your wrong. And that was just a 30 second google search.
d. Do you actually read about these issues, or do you just say whatever you think is right?

Did the mafia end when prohibition ended?
No, because they were diversified.

They are already heavily involved in both of these things

Well Americans outnumber our own murderous thugs 10,000-1 as well yet we give them free everything. If we would just nut up, we could get build the wall to get rid of their problem and cut the political correctness on the home front to fix ours.

Ending alcohol prohibition crippled the mafia. Ending drug prohibition would cripple the cartels. So what if that single action wouldn’t completely end either? I’m thoroughly disinclined to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Really not sure what your definition of "cripple" is, cause the mafia still went pretty strong after prohibition. Perhaps if you provide something to back up your statement I'll understand a little better.

Not Phizer, Bayer. It's their product anyway.

Well said. There are enough parallels between the WoD and prohibition to make adequate p rofections regarding outcomes

I think there are studies out there that basically say that legalizing prostitution wouldn't clean up the prostitution business, it would simply lead to more human trafficking. Several well known instances of this happening.
They would just be more emboldened IMO.
LINK
quote:
The study’s findings include: Countries with legalized prostitution are associated with higher human trafficking inflows than countries where prostitution is prohibited. The scale effect of legalizing prostitution, i.e. expansion of the market, outweighs the substitution effect, where legal sex workers are favored over illegal workers. On average, countries with legalized prostitution report a greater incidence of human trafficking inflows.
quote:
The effect of legal prostitution on human trafficking inflows is stronger in high-income countries than middle-income countries. Because trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation requires that clients in a potential destination country have sufficient purchasing power, domestic supply acts as a constraint.
quote:
Criminalization of prostitution in Sweden resulted in the shrinking of the prostitution market and the decline of human trafficking inflows. Cross-country comparisons of Sweden with Denmark (where prostitution is decriminalized) and Germany (expanded legalization of prostitution) are consistent with the quantitative analysis, showing that trafficking inflows decreased with criminalization and increased with legalization.
quote:
The type of legalization of prostitution does not matter — it only matters whether prostitution is legal or not. Whether third-party involvement (persons who facilitate the prostitution businesses, i.e, “pimps”) is allowed or not does not have an effect on human trafficking inflows into a country. Legalization of prostitution itself is more important in explaining human trafficking than the type of legalization.

Probably depends upon the degree to which it is regulated and how it's regulated

That's probably true, but it doesn't mean they won't turn to it as a source of revenue
Of course
quote:
Human trafficking is actually a more profitable business.
It may be more profitable...when it's successful. Trafficking weed is so cost effective that if less than half of the product makes it across, it's still extremely profitable.

I would say the availability of prostitution is not a good idea if you want a country of citizenry who are built upon the idea of a nuclear family.
Wouldn't you say the biggest issue with blacks in the US is the destruction of the nuclear family? How would legalizing prostitution help children grow up in more stable households?

You’re ignoring basic economic principle with this. There would be dramatically more supply in an expanded legal domestic marketplace for people who want to buy it. The cartels would suffer catastrophic profit losses as a result. Why would anyone want the cartels to have any business?
The wall would hurt the cartels as well
The wall would hurt the cartels as well

Kill all of the cartels. Every single member.
