You mean former Democrats, up until 1980, a Republican would have had a hard time getting elected to Dog Catcher. A large number of the Republicans you speak of were initially elected as Democrats. Term Limits have actually started to clear out the old guard and most New Republicans were always Republicans.

Louisiana is a victim to History and populism.
1. Long was alot of things, but he actually brought roads and education to La. He kept control at the State level and dolled out money as he saw fit.

2. Edwin Edwards, he had soo much potential, he was the first from the Southwestern part of the State to become Governor, one of the Sharpest political minds in the whole Country not just LA, but chose to use than potential to keep control with the State and to develop a new Constitution that put all the power in the Governor's hands.

3. New Orleans, initially a very French Federal Government place that Commanded a lot of attention from the State. Until it's decline in the 80's, New Orleans, was Louisiana. If you look at what New Orleans had in the 60's prior to Landrieu's election, to where it is today. There is no question that the corrupt politicians in New Orleans has been a huge detriment to this State, but without it, we are Mississippi. The current Constitution has statutes in it that names actual addresses, streets, etc. in New Orleans in the document. They were the largest city prior to Katrina and garnered most of the State's attention and has been controlled by Democrats since post reconstruction. The election of Landrieu is a watershed into the issues we as a state has had since that time.

There have been recent Republicans elected that have a different mindset than those that were elected prior. However, the current Governor has done nothing to change La's trajectory. In fact, he has really made outmigration worse. The next Governor will most assuredly be a Republican and could have the opportunity to change a lot of what goes on in this State by putting forward an agenda that includes a new Constitution, no State income taxes, and allow other areas of State besides New Orleans to drive the agenda.

10 percent sales tax with nothing to show for it. I just bought a car out of state and the salesman couldn't believe the tax rate when he looked it up.

But everyone has skin in the game with a sales tax.

Unlike other states, Louisiana does have an abundance of natural resources. However, Louisiana, largely throughout its history, has been way, way behind on tax revenue, diverse business and industry, crime, education, and corruption. Louisiana is as good as any in the "good ole boys club." There are too many hoops and pockets that must first get greased to get anything really done here. Being adjacent to Texas doesn't help as many better high-paying jobs, better cost-of-living, and better quality of life attract many of our desirable citizens and residents. That said, I truly feel that Tennessee (especially), Alabama (not as much as Tennessee, but more than Arkansas and Mississippi), Arkansas, and even Mississippi have taken positive steps to improve their states. Louisiana appears to be stagnant and treading water, much like West Virginia.

All previous reasons are applicable, but I'll add,

The weather, climate and water are perpetually an issue.
If you move just about anywhere else, that becomes one less issue.

Because of corruption. Doesn’t matter if it’s a Democrat or Republican, they’re all the same in this state. It’s all about who you know and who has the best connections. Then us retards vote for the same kind of people for Governor and other government roles.

Richard Nelson is who we all need to vote for if people really are serious about trying to change this state. It may already be too late though. We’re kind of like Russia. The corruption is so deep and has been a thing for such a long time, that it’s going to be very hard to fix it all. We’d have to burn it all down and start over from scratch to fix it.

150 years ago the people of La. had little regard for education. The majority of jobs were in agriculture, fishing, timber and construction labor. None of them required that you be literate.
Then 100 years ago the oil industry took off and there were tons of jobs that didn't require literacy. So, what was the point of going to school?

The following generations suffered from their parents passing along little regard of education.

Dude is way too smart to have any chance of winning anything in this state. Last night, I heard him riff on how rainy day funds should have been used to pay down debt in the teacher’s pension fund because the debt is accruing interest at 7% and causing a massive dead-weight debt servicing payment each year.

Unfortunately for him, that type of pragmatic forethought is way over the head of 90% of the electorate.

Its a mixture of the black culture and that let the good times roll culture.

Half the damn state is unemployable or would rather just commit crimes than actually go to work.

It was really striking how much his speaking style reminded me of Bobby Jindal when he first ran for governor against Blanco.

I tell my boys to leave this shithole.....there are much better places to live, and that is a fact!

LA has not evolved, and it can't. Drive around this state and it has not changed in 100 years. Oil, Gas and Chemicals drove the state, and no other industries, technologies have entered....we do not have the workforce necessary for the new business world.

Anything Long did for LA is completely undermined by the theft. The State Lease royalty interest (I forget the lease #) which was stolen by the Long family is a travesty and the fact that the LA legislature cannot right this nearly 70 year wrong is a fricking embarrassment - there's your banana republic in a nutshell. I don't understand why anyone who is ambulatory and has a college degree remains in the state. It's an economic backwater and it is kept that way by the controlling political and old money interests.

New Orleans is what it is because the city fathers basically closed the city to outsiders - didn't want to lose their control. This story plays out everywhere across LA. You know why Lafayette has UL and the Oil Center? Opelousas, that piece of shite backwater, rejected them bc controlling families didn't want to lose control.

Others have posted it already - french social and political culture run through all of this, too.
