Should be 21, and should be paying taxes. If you're on government assistance you cant vote. In college? Pick tops or being able to vote.

Because .... FDR, Ike (who commanded 18 year olds in WWII), Korea, Vietnam, Kennedy, The 60s and finally LBJ.

Nixon couldn't fight it at the time.

26th Ammendment was inevitable and it happened around 1971.

I will say this and I will catch heat for it but a lot of it, at the time, was also racially motivated.

I will also say, having lived it and been an adult at the time, that most 18 year olds were far more mature in those days. It was not uncommon to marry, settle down and start a family back then. Women were just entering the workforce and, while women couldn't be drafted they were a massive voting block at 18 for the liberal progressives so it was a huge win for liberal progressives.

There was a flip going on at the time as well .... and it won the day for liberals and sent many blue dog democrats to the Right.

This isn't a factual Winston Churchill quote despite it always being accredited to him.

There no record of Churchill ever saying this. Not only that, but scholars point out that he was a conservative at 15 and a liberal by 35 so this quote makes no sense for him to ever say.

I've said the same thing on here before and been downvoted.

There was a time when 18 year olds were adults, now most kids are still sucking off their parents until they're 25 years old and have no real life experiences that would help them cast an educated vote.

30? Ridiculous, especially if coupled with the second half of that sentence. What if I'm a high earner by 26?

This is hilarious. The OP assumed it was a Churchill quote because it was on the internet. Then started a thread about young people being too stupid to vote.

American democracy is a dumbass-driven system. There is a large pool of dumbasses between 18 and 21.

Should be at least 30.

agreed, you dont have a clue about life until you reach 30 and sex and drugs isnt your only thought process in life

i would also make a minimum of 5 years job experience a requirement so voters understand the value of money and earning a paycheck

I would have zero problems with letting 18 year old military personnel vote ala Starship Troopers. Let them drink too by gosh.

With the draft abolished, that Amendment should probably be repealed. Instead, idiots are trying to lower it.

The draft isn't abolished though.

How the frick can you guys agree that you can tax someone but they can't vote? We fought a war over this already.

The criteria to vote should be tax payer first! Age second.

Should be a test and required ownership of property to vote... I don't really give a frick about the age...

You should have accomplished more than standing around sucking up oxygen in order to get a vote...

Because the American electorate is comprised of idiots who believe that the skill set which qualifies one for voting is the same skill set which qualifies one for carrying weapons and pulling triggers.

Tying the change directly to Vietnam is a mistake. There had been a movement to award the franchise at age 18, long before Vietnam. Eisenhower voiced support as early as 1953. Granted, the Vietnam conflict was probably the one issue that gave the movement enough impetus to enact the change.
