Why Fyodor Dostoevsky disdained Catholicism

quote:
Fyodor Dostoevsky viewed Roman Catholicism as a tragic distortion of true Christianity. As a devout Russian Orthodox Christian, he believed Catholicism had merged church and state, sacrificed spiritual freedom for earthly power, and adopted rationalism, which he considered the root of modern socialism and atheism.
quote:
In The Brothers Karamazov (famously in "The Grand Inquisitor" chapter) and Demons, Dostoevsky argued that the Catholic Church succumbed to the devil's third temptation in the wilderness. By seeking earthly, political kingdoms to secure humanity's material needs, he claimed Catholicism destroyed the very freedom of conscience Christ offered
quote:
Dostoevsky viewed Catholicism and socialism as two sides of the same coin. He argued both sought to forcibly organize human society and impose a sterile, rationalized moral order, rather than allowing individuals to choose Christ through free will.
quote:
In The Idiot, Prince Myshkin passionately argues that Catholicism is worse than atheism. He claims the Vatican's pursuit of temporal dominion and control over human destiny is precisely what birthed modern socialism.
quote:
His animosity was fueled by longstanding Russian suspicions of Polish nationalism, Jesuits, and the centralized authority of the Papacy, which he viewed as deeply authoritarian.
I’m not taking a side one way or another, but Dostoevsky is one of those figures in history that you have to stop and listen to purely based on his philosophical depth.
I remember reading once that a previous Pope was asked if he ever doubted Catholicism and he mentioned Dostoevsky’s chapter “the grand inquisitor” in brothers karamazov

Is this along the lines of what Mel Gibson talks about with the sort of shadow papacy and how they hijacked the shite out of true Catholicism?

Not that I don't want to discuss this, but 99% of people here have never read anything longer than an Eric Daugherty tweet and you want to analyze Dostoevsky?

I think he's just trolling because apparently we haven't had enough Green vs Orange topics lately.
But you're not wrong.

Who gives a shite about one person's opinion?... seriously, who gives a damn?

This and he’s conducting some stupid polling for whatever failure of a firm he works for. He just wraps it in topics like this one hoping people won’t notice.

What’s wrong with theological debate

That, and the diddling.

Nothing. Just don’t pretend that’s your only intention.

What would you know about Catholicism?

A Russian guy who thinks that the Russian religion was the one true religion. Truly an ubiased opinion!
This is the equivalent of Jim Bob from Small Town, Arkansas, USA, believing that 1st Baptist Church in Small Town, Arkansas, is the one true religion.

So your telling me you know nothing about Fyodor Dostoevsky without telling me you know nothing about him....
Let me help set the context ... Dostoevsky is generally considered one of the greatest novelist not only in Russia but also the World.
... Your Welcome....

Dostoevsky is one of the greatest Christian philosophers of all time. He's not just some dude. The Bros Karamazov is a masterwork, and should be read by everyone who proclaims Christian heritage.
The chapter that's specifically cited here, The Grand Inquisitor, can be read alone for a greater understanding of Dostoevsky's thought process.
It's worth reading. I'm not catholic, but I'm very intrigued by catholicism and its teachings. The Grand Inquisitor is a very worthy critique.
Not to say Dostoevsky doesn't have issues with orthodoxy, either. It's peppered throughout Karamazov. But that requires a longer attention span than one chapter.

Sad how the Catholics showed up and saw how they could get rich and said they were the first church. Everybody knows that Jesus was a Baptist because he was baptized by John the Baptist

Given your penchant for blindly pro-Israel posts (along with other posts calling Americans in general too fat and too stupid), this reeks of anti-Catholic trolling.
Just admit what you are doing, the faux-intellectual bit is transparent.

How is this a Political Talk topic?
Posted on 6/18/26 at 3:32 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
So you're saying there's a guy who thinks his version of his religion is the right one, and the other versions of his religion are wrong.
Say it ain't so.
