My theory? It doesn't have much to do with the muslims themselves or their history on this planet. The reason the modern day left and the muslims have tended to align themselves together is strictly because of the common enemy of the western world. The marxists left sees every evil of the world through the lens of the oppressors and the oppressed. They want to see this dynamic toppled and they want to remove traditional western values from power. The muslims want to usher in a worldwide caliphate and need to eliminate western, christian values to do so.
Now, if you put a marxist lefty and a muslim in a booth together and got them to talk about what they actually believe, they'd agree on very little but it's not about that. It's about ousting the christian western world but make no mistake, theoretically if they succeeded, the muslims would turn on the marxist lefties so fast it would be unbelievable. The muslims know this and even though deep down, they cannot stand the trans, lgbt, free love and sex, debacherous lifestyle of the modern left, they're willing to let them exist temporarily without pushback because they're essentially useful idiots that the muslims hope will help them on the road to their ultimate goal.

Because they aren't white and because a lot of their countries are in shitty climates and have stark differences between wealthy and poor (read: they fiscally oppress themselves, but that doesn't garner sympathy votes).
