From the Wiki on that book:
I agree as to all of these hypotheses, although with the advent of email and cellphones, I find it hard to believe that people are "working" less hours on average than before. Even in 2000 when the book was published, someone could go on vacation and disconnect from their office, aside from maybe a telephone call from a landline. Now? In many careers you can never escape no matter where you go, what you are doing or what time it is.

He did suggest that suburbanization, economics and time pressures had some effect, though he noted that average working hours had shortened. He concluded the main cause was technology "individualizing" people's leisure time via television and the Internet, suspecting that "virtual reality helmets" would carry this further in the future

American society these days is alienating, there is no sense of community or mutual relationship with neighbors. Just look at industry, you used to have entire towns and generations of people all working for the same company that paid great benefits. Sort of a rising tide lifts all boats.
A colloquial example is how prevalent bowling alleys and leagues were all over the country, no matter the racial or socioeconomic makeup. It was a communal meeting place, face to face, people interacting with one another.
Now basically all domestic industry, and the connection that came along with it, has been shipped overseas and replaced with the gig economy that explicitly offers no benefits, teamwork, etc. You're an independent contractor working for yourself.
This is definitely correct. A lot of the institutions that historically brought people together slowly died out and now the most recent generations are only finding any sense of community on the internet.
Rich people hang out with rich people, poor with poor, athletes with athletes, doctors with doctors, lawyers with lawyers, plumbers with plumbers.
People rarely cross socioeconomic lines in friendships, dating, or any other association. People don't marry outside of their socioeconomic status, they don't live in neighborhoods outside of their socioeconomic status.
Our society, that was once hailed as a "classless" society is now becoming segregated based on class, and we have no monarchy to blame this time. We're doing it to ourselves and it's tearing us apart. Poor kids only hang out with poor kids, only go to school with other poor kids, rich kids only associate with other rich kids.

This wasn’t Covid loneliness. It’s cultural rot and Marxism that created this
What begets what?
The cultural rot is because we let Marxists get in positions of actual power instead of purging them out of this country like we should have done decades ago.

Man has become something his mind and soul can't handle. We crave adventure, excitement and risk, its in our DNA.
Society has turned us into scared weenies who are constantly conflicted, because we have been programmed to mute our natural tendencies.

That’s why I go to Mexico or the Caribbean. It’s an excuse to lock the phone away

awww look, you're intentionally being obtuse and ignoring the point so you don't have to face the truth.
Clearly I don't mean "survive" in the literal sense and I think you know that.
I guess I should have used thrive instead of survive

In part because young white men are not allowed to have an identity. Every other group is fawned over, and feels a kind of camaraderie with their own kind.

The Roe v. Wade reversal will kill hookup culture, IMO. Time will tell.

Look at public schools these days. Nearly all of the teachers are fat leftist feminist troglodytes. The problem start earlier than college.

Interesting thread
I agree with many of the things said above and how technology has changed things.
Slow, agree with most of your comments here but not sure what distinction you are making by saying he was not too “weird” to you. Even with more female choices in the past, he still would have been classified in the odd Goth crowd, or something like that.
And kudos to our 84 year old commenting. Always good to hear different perspectives.

Nihilistic incels living in homes where the father is largely absent. I can tell you that as a late teenage if I came home with piercings, blue hair or tattoos my Dad would not just be all up in my shite....that would be the least of my problems with him.....and then my mom.
But a lot of these males who are incels, engage in the fantasy world of video games because Dad is largely absent

Most of the people participating in hook-up culture are using some type of contraceptive.
