Why do people that buy into conspiracy theories suspend all logic and common sense?

An example is people trying to tie Tom Hanks, Ellen Degeneres , Oprah etc to the whole Epstein pedo ring. A meme has been floating around the internet for the past couple of weeks that lists people who were on the Epstein flight logs. It lists the above mentioned celebrities and people or adamantly claiming it is proof. The problem is it also lists
Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders, and Anderson Cooper among others.
When I have asked why if the list real and Obama went to the island why have no conservative outlets even mentioned it they claim all the media is in on the conspiracy and coverup. They can't even fathom that this meme they saw on facebook is fake. It is kind of fascinating when you think about it.

My sister told my senior citizen mom that "Tom Hanks moved to Greece because he is being implicated in the Jeffrey Epstein mess and Greece is hard to extradite from". My mom bought this hook, line, and sinker and argued with me for an hour that it was true.

It is a lot like professional wrestling. There are heels and there are faces. It is all black and white. You pull for your guy and part of that us believing the absolute worst of your opponent....to the point that they are evil enemies.

I have seen this a bunch. Most try to claim we don't have an extradition treaty with Greece when a simple search proves otherwise. They also claim pedophilia is not illegal there and is legally viewed just as a disability.

They feel the world is out of control and are subconsciously aware that it's passed them by. Conspiracies are their way of deflecting blame and rationalizing change.

Because both sides have skeletons in their closets. Republicans were mainly behind alot of the sex traffiking in the 80's. The Franklin Cover-Up. Also God knows what went on during the Bush run CIA that gave us Iran-Contra.
Maybe they all meet in the middle with this stuff. But if the major opponent doesn't say anything at something so egregious, then there's always some mutual bs.

Our government and media lies to us every day. If we had an honest government and press, the number of people who believe conspiracy theories would be far less.

Have any conspiracies ever occured? Name a couple. How long after the event did it become known?
I think about Operation Ajax, Project ARTICHOKE, Project MKUltra, etc.... people didn't find out about these until 20 years after the fact right? An I believe the only reason people found out was due to Watergate.
But hey, those were 70 years ago before computers, nothing like that would ever happen now. Right?

this is also very true
people don't trust the media nor the government because it has been proven that they both distort the truth or just outright lie
and it just builds from there because for a lot of people being "woke" is a competition
