The more apt comparison to vouchers would be if we eliminated tops and turned the normal state funding into vouchers.
What do you think Jindal did?

Make all the universities private
They essentially are. Not sure what what more you want?

and then give each la grad 5,000 a semester (or whatever it works out to be). They can use it at lsu, Tulane, etc. Any college located in LA.

I think there should be a fixed amount, rather than have it be tuition based. But, in case you didn't know, TOPS can be used at private colleges in LA.

I hate it.... If you can't graduate at a 3.0 or better then shut it down.... 3 million more dollars thrown at worthless grambling and southern universities to bribe the black caucus in the new tax hike also. Shut them down..... Swear to god almighty if I was 10 years younger I'd sell out and move my family across the Sabine river...... I'm starting to depise my state

They need to raise the ACT requirement not the GPA requirement.

Testing is not equal across the board, the standard students are held to is not equivalent across the board and most importantly the grading scales are not equivalent across the board.

ACT is a great tool because everyone takes the same test and is on the same playing field.

GPA is an extremely flawed method, especially when comparing public schools in the state to private schools.
I agree with that

It’s literally socialized education and a ridiculous program with the requirements so weak.

I agree - I spent ten years teaching high school math and suffered thru a half dozen kids in every Alg II class who couldn't honestly pass a remedial math test, but who were enrolled my Algebra 2 because TOPS. Held the rest of the class back from being able to spend the time they needed.

Because having funding dollars travel with students and having institutions compete for those dollars by offering good programs raises the bar for everyone. A university has to put out a better product or they don't get funding. My wish is that more state higher ed funding was tied to the students.

I understand what you are saying, but it is roughly a $10,000/year freebie to LSU students that qualify. It's a complete handout not partial. If the govt didn't fund LSU it wouldn't exist and those dollars spent are understood. It's the demand for full assistance that is hypocritical and disgusting.

It should have requirements but 26 is high.

Research Florida and Georgia among a few others. I think it's 23 ACT with a 3.0 gpa and community service hours (like 8 a year through high school).

Florida does offer 2 levels, where as the GPA stands but more community service hours and 26 ACT I think.

The community service is what sells me. Those are people we want educated in our system.

So...TOPS is the biggest problem in LA?

Middle and High earners gotta pay a fortune of potential retirement for private school because the public schools also funded by our tax money are unacceptable in most cases.

I would view TOPS as just my kid getting back some of my goddamn money stolen from me.

Go to other states...and then you will know how pathetic LA is. It is a mess.

The three largest cities have black female democrat mayors....and TOPS is the issue?

LOL.

If you want people to stay or come home..or for non-LA folks to come to LA to live and work....then give them a reason to do so.

You can deduct 5k on your state taxes for private tuition, just like I do every year. TOPS is your entitlement and you are no different than others who collect them.

Anyone who is “conservative” and gets pissy over TOPS being taken away is laughable. If you want free college, join the military. If you want your kid to go to college without military service, be responsible and start a 529.

You sent your kids to private schools (me too), you probably live in a nice house (me too), and drive a decent car (me too), and you did all of that without planning for your child’s future. You didn’t save for college and you don’t want them to float loans. Why in the hell should MY tax dollars be used for your poor planning?

Return TOPS to its roots, privately funded, for NOLA public schools, you bunch of freeloaders.

I pay way more than $5K.

$5K does not even cover 1 kid.

On top of all the other fricking high taxes for the state dregs.

I pay more than 5k too. It is what it is. Plan better...

You are no different than them. You didn’t adequately plan because you are reliant on the government. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

BTW....I agree with you...get rid of it..but get rid of all the other wasteful shite, too, all the stuff with 0% chance of ROI.

At least with TOPS, there is some hope for ROI.

I hate TOPS and believe it should be similar to a loan program. Graduate with a 4 years degree in a meaningful field it is free. Graduate in some general studies type degree you pay back, quit you pay back, fail out you pay back

It just seems like it should somehow be tied to staying in state on a 1:1 year basis over th next 10 years..or, have to pay some of it back.

Why should LA and its citizens not expect ROI?

The state should not be in the business of giving or lending people $ to go to college. That's what banks are for. TOPs is a fricking social program and must be eliminated. Contact your legislators..
