Why do Louisiana conservatives like TOPS?

It’s literally socialized education and a ridiculous program with the requirements so weak.

You can be a conservative but not an ideologue. My kid got decent out of state scholarship offers, but he is going to LSU. One of his main motivations was TOPS. If you want to get rid of TOPS, fine. But announce now that you're doing it in 4 years. Don't pull the rug out from under people who have relied on the promise.

Why is a capitalist system of education better than a taxpayer funded/socialized one?
Posted on 6/23/18 at 12:46 pm to Lsujacket66
I've always advocated that if TOPS is gonna happen then the requirements should be higher. I think 26 ACT should be the minimum.

You’re an idiot if that’s how you view TOPS.

It's like a tax rebate.

I'd rather invest money in the bright youth of our state than give it away to society's underclass.

If you are against Tops, then you must be against public education in general.
State colleges are already heavily subsidized by the state. Tops just funds the last portion.

I agree with this. It would also cut the costs of the program by more than half and greatly decrease the dropout rate.

Because a large part of them have the better kids in schools and like having tops to help w college.

I hate TOPS because it's abused by people who have no intention of keeping that taxpayer funded college education in the state of Louisiana to contribute to the betterment of Louisiana.
They get TOPS, graduate college with a marketable degree and then leave the state.
frick paying to educate another state's workforce.

A lot of those bright youth have no intention of returning that investment to the State of Louisiana and its people.

I am not a fan. However, if you're going to offer welfare, better to offer it to help people become independent.

That isn't the fault of the TOPS program. Your rightful disappointment is misapplied.

Is he going to return that investment to Louisiana or just move out of state after he graduates?

The youth that leave then immediately flee your state and run to Texas, California, etc?
New York is doing a stupid program like TOPS, but at least NY requires you to stay and work in NY for 4 years or pay it back.

Why would anyone pass on scholarship money..?
Side note: Do you want your social security?

...and you better drastically increase merit scholarships in that time or LSU might as well be SLU.
