re: Trump just now: disinfection injection was "sarcastic question to reporters like you"

What concerns me is the damage this is doing to the Republican party.

Reopening does NOT mean that business will return to pre-virus levels any time soon. It will take a long time before many will go to restaurants, fly on an airplane, go to a movie, etc.. The people with the most discretionary incomes are going to be the most reluctant. We are in for a period of sustained economic weakness or worse.

No one forced him to say it. The guy was serious- you can tell the way he looked to the side and asked the DR. questions. There's no way to sugarcoat it. As someone who has voted Republican 95% of the time, I'm very afraid the Republican party and those who blanketly support Trump are hurting the cause of conservatism in for many years. He is NO Ronald Reagan and really is a very poor representative of the party. Wish he would resign and let Pence take over.

It's the states' governors that have the authority to shut down/reopen their states -

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was being sarcastic (which I don't believe). Is this something a President should being saying at a news conference when over 50,000 Americans have died? Why can't Republican legislators see this is doing damage to the Republican party that will take many years to recover from?

re: I know Trump was under tremendous pressure, but he shouldn’t have shut us down.

He didn't shut us down, the governors did.
re: Why has everyone forgotten the entire point of the lockdown?

You are correct. BUT many consumers view these as two completely separate issues. Just because you reopen the economy doesn't mean it will return to the pre-virus level overnight. Not gonna happen. My guess is the group who has the most descretionary income to spend will be very slow to completely return.

BUT, there are many who won't.

Realistically, even with opening businesses up, it's going to be quite a while before many businesses return to the pre-virus level. Many people are not going to go to a movie, restaurant, ride on an airplane, take a cruise, etc.. anytime soon.

What really matters are voters (and especially Independents) in swing states (e.g., MI, PA WI,OH, etc).

Problem is you can open businesses, but many businesses are not going to return to pre-virus levels anytime soon. Many are going to be reluctant to go to restaurants, fly on an airplane, go to a movie, take a cruise,etc..

In LA, public schools have not been cut - their funding has been frozen, but not cut. Tremendous amount of fat.. Jindal cut universities so they receive only about 30% of their funding from the state. It's time to closely scrutinize funding for public education in LA.

What is being missed here is -just because you reopen businesses doesn't mean your customer/business level is going to return to the pre-virus level anytime soon. I don't see a segment of the population going to restaurant, flying on an airplane, taking a cruise, going to an amusement park, etc., anytime soon. Even with a complete reopen, we need to moderate our expectations.

Require ALL new employees and retired employees with state pensions to convert to 401ks. LA would save an incredible amount of $. Should have already been done.
re: This slow roll reopening is going to be a disaster

Businesses cannot be viable without customers. You can open the economy up, but pre-virus business levels are NOT going to return quickly as there is a segment of the population that is still not going to go to restaurants, take a vacation, ride on airplanes, take a cruise, etc..
re: Florida coordinating reopening with five southern states

I'm OK if states want to handle it this way, but so far that hasn't been the case. Governors have been planning to reopen STATES and not AREAS.

Depends of the part of the state you're talking about. The southern part of Louisiana is one of the worst hit areas in the nation. BUT I suspect you want to ignore this FACT.

Do away with state pensions. Require ALL new employees and those who are currently receiving a state pension to convert to 401ks.

Objectively, if you look at the numbers, the only other state that really comes close in the number of cases is FL. What happens if the number of cases/deaths significantly increase as a result of opening too soon. Then JBE is gonna look real good. Also, keep in mind, he's not running for re-election, so that's another factor.

I'm all for cutting state pensions, including per diems and food/housing/travel allowances of state legislators, and their state pensions (if any). They should ALL be in 401ks. Those currently receiving state pensions should be forced to convert to 401ks. I believe this can be done through state bankruptcy. States are not going to be able to continue making current pension payments so revenue is very likely going to try to be raised through additional taxes.
