I've always thought it's because most people in an urban environment rely heavily on basic services provided by the government (water, power, heat, transit). So they're more likely to trust in the government as a result.

Even then, liberals loved them some big government programs but they had a very healthy mistrust of government overall.
There was a time when I had some kinship with liberals back in the 80s or so. I mean, I still was conservative and voted that way, but, at least in some areas, liberals and I were on the same page.
Then, one day, I looked up, and liberals were the book burners!

Understand this, most American Marxist believe this life is it and that’s why they’re so self absorbed and narcissistic. Anybody who knows anything about history knows government is the least efficient way to do just about anything.

I was a “classical “ liberal during college in the 70s as were most college students. Free speech and the distrust of government,and authorities were the cornerstone of liberal thought. The average liberal student then would be considered a conservative today. What is called liberal ism today is actually Communism//Marxism

It's a deep seated, genetic group/tribe instinct. Read the Book "Envy" by H. Schoeck and start at about p. 100. The degrees of delusion that people who have a strong tribal bond very powerful; they are backed by millennia of success in the societies which encouraged Group unity over self. Fascinating and illuminating read.
