re: Why can’t we separate Conservative values from religion?

Religion is a hot topic that I usually avoid. Especially when the communication is in writing.
Since I don't wanna fight with anybody or get into a debate, I'm just gonna be short and to the point.
Moral codes are something that... Largely... Are taught. We do have some innate, built in "moral" compass, but it needs to be built upon and expanded.
Since many of us are taught religion as children, that becomes the vehicle by which our morals are expanded upon. And it becomes ingrained in them.
And for many, don't want to have the two separated, because it intrudes upon their beliefs. Something that many build their lives around.

we know the Bible predicted it
2 Timothy 3:1-5
3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth

You may be able to separate moral behavior from explicit Christian belief, but you cannot ultimately separate objective moral truth from the source that makes it objectively true.
We recoil at rape and murder because we are made in the image of God with His morality imprinted on our souls. At least that’s what I believe.

Please tell me more about Roman values. Greatest civilization in history that one could argue that Christians borrowed inspiration from.
I don't think you've read Roman history. Dictator emperors like Nero and Caligula, the murdering for sport of Christians, brutal conquest. We draw no inspiration from Rome. They were powerful, and yet horribly corrupt, and they collapsed, just like every other ancient empire built on false ideals.
Rome doesn't hold a candle to America. But America will also collapse, if it's people turn away from God.

What’s the motivation for morals if you don’t believe in religion? If you believe in the afterlife and to follow morals you get rewarded in the afterlife then it makes sense. To do the right thing is difficult and requires conviction and self control
If you think when you die then it’s all over why be moral? Enjoy the pleasures and indulgence offered in your lifetime since when it’s over it doesn’t matter

I know enough about it to say this, those emperors were nearer to the end of Rome, but also made lots of enemies, so even historians disagree about accuracy. In those days you could destroy physical records and monuments.
But now you’ve made me realize that Republicans need to turn to Roman rather than Christian values, which Christianity is based on.

There a many good debates on this. I think the argument is that morality has to be based on something, and our western morals are based on Christianity.
They are based on Aristotelian, Stoic, and Epicurean Greek philosophy.
Christian morality is to do whatever the deity says in that moment. Sometimes killing babies is good and divinely commanded and other times it’s not. It’s based on shared blood guilt… one person sins and the whole tribe is guilty and needs to be saved. And they can also sacrifice a person to pay for the sins of others rather than each person being responsible for their own actions.
Here’s the thing - Christians don’t actually follow Christian morality. What some think of as Christian morality - do things that promote happiness and wellbeing, help others, reduce suffering, is actually Greek philosophy. And honestly some Christian ideas come from Greek philosophy while rejecting the core Hebrew “morality”. Some other Christian ideas - the golden rule as an example - even pre-date the Greeks and goes back to ancient Sumer and India.
If a “bad guy” makes a bad decision and negatively affects the wellbeing of another person, should that bad guy be tortured for all of eternity? Does one lapse in judgment mean he should be ruthlessly tortured for all time? If you don’t think so, then your morality isn’t rooted in Christianity.
Do you think we should torture people for all of eternity for not thinking the right thing? Endless torture for a thought crime… a thought crime that cannot be controlled? Let’s say someone isn’t truly convinced God is real or Jesus was real. They’d maybe even like to believe it but can’t force themselves to genuinely believe it because they aren’t convinced by the evidence - the evidence which doesn’t even exist. Is it fair, just, and reasonable to torture that person for eternity? If you don’t think so, then your morality isn’t grounded in Christian thought.

I'm a conservative and I'm not an atheist, but I also don't belong to a religion.
There is a reason it's called the Grand Ole Party. You have 3 main factions of the republican party.
Conservatives - pretty close to Libertarians (federal level anyway). Small government, less spending, no nation building/foreign wars, etc. This is what the republican party is on the campaign trail.
Social Conservatives - likely who you are referring to. They are conservative expect when it comes to social issues. They want to enforce more social rules than conservatives. I normally agree with the morally, but I do not at all agree with them when they want to force it.
Neoconservatives. They aren't conservative at all. They often pretend to be conservatives to get elected. They are basically liberals. They want foreign wars, increase government spending, increase the police state, mass immigration etc. They came from the democrat party.

Whole it is ok to be skeptical and question - what if you are wrong?
Also - what is wrong with living by gods 10 laws?

just like many Republican politicians…they have rock solid values
The ones who can’t pass a balanced budget bill who enrich themselves and their families at the taxpayer expense who cheat on their wives and buy hookers? Not rock solid to me. Better than the democrats but that’s not saying much.
quote:
let’s say more education and awareness
More education, awareness, and even most importantly- honesty - will turn people atheist. Just a fact of life. Religion in America will probably be a minority thing for the kooks and nuts in 20-30 years.
quote:
those great Christian values
You need more education to be quite honest. The Christians you know may have good values but it isn’t due to their religion but their nature.

Let me combine a better party here from those:
Small government, less spending, no nation building/foreign wars unless quick and necessary for dominance in trade reinforced by military prowess. Listens to economic advisors with anything that avoids high inflation unless high growth opportunities. Bans anything that makes society unruly.
Am I a REAL conservative now? Don’t need ppl to tell me what to think.

Especially if atheism is growing but is afraid to latch onto good values because from the outside, it looks like cult that requires belief in listening to an insane man recite crazy passages on Sundays with a wealth tax
Sounds like atheists are a bunch of weak soy drinkers to whom appearance is more important than substantive values. Not surprising, given that you people don’t believe in anything. And what the frick is this wealth tax you’re talking about?

The good news/bad news is that there aren't many Conservatives left.

Im not conservative, I am a Registered Independent [tm] since the 1990s.. first person I ever voted for for President was a guy named Ross Perot.. probably not a great vote to cast, but instructional in that im not loyal to a party, or even a philosophy .. matter of fact, if any candidate demands loyalty or fealty from me, as in the current occupant of the Oval Office- I tend to run in the opposite direction .
That said, im not conservative, partly b/c the word conservative, to me, means 'close-minded', 'stuck in the past', 'handcuffed by tradition'.. you get the point .. maybe not the literal definition , but it's what conservative means to me, and what most conservatives ive known in life seem to be like ... by contrast, even though I dont consider myself 'progressive'- at least that word means constantly evolving, open-minded, ok with change, with progress.. NOT stuck in the past .... I hope what im trying to say makes sense, but I welcome any counterpoints .. I come in peace .
